‘I’d Go to Jail’: Roy Jones Jr. Explains Why He Won’t Succeed in Today’s Era

Boxing legend Roy Jones Jr. had accomplished a lot of success in his illustrious career. He was a force to be reckoned with during his era. However, he believes things would have been different if he were a boxer in this social media era.

Back in those days, the only time boxers would trash-talk to each other was when they would meet in person for interviews, weigh-ins, etc. It is because there were no social media platforms, such as Twitter, during Jones’ era. Now, anyone trash-talks about others on social media regardless of whether they are fighting them or not.

As Jones is coaching Chris Eubank Jr. for his upcoming bout, he was present at Eubank’s recent press conference. Eubank called out his opponent for trash-talking on social media in the press conference. This is what brought up the topic of what Jones would have done as a boxer in this era? ‘Captain Hook’ believes he wouldn’t have succeeded in today’s era.

In his interview with ‘Pro Boxing Fans,’ Jones said – “No, I wouldn’t because I’d go to jail. Because if you talk about me on social media, I’d hit you in the mouth. So, when I see you, I’ll go jail.”

How good was Roy Jones Jr. in his boxing career?

Jones made his boxing debut in 1989 and retired in 2018, with a spectacular professional boxing record of 66-9 (47 T/KO). He is a former four-division world champion, having held major titles in the middleweight, super middleweight, light heavyweight, and heavyweight divisions.

Jones has defeated several formidable opponents in his boxing career, such as Felix Trinidad, Antonio Tarver, John Ruiz, Montell Griffin, James Toney, and Bernard Hopkins. With such a resume and track record, no one could ever doubt his credentials within the ropes.

Furthermore, Jones is the only boxer in history to start his professional career at light middleweight and go on to win a heavyweight title. Thus, the legend status is something that won’t seem out of place with ‘Captain Hook’.
