Is There a 36-Hole Cut at the CJ Cup 2021?

The CJ Cup is one of the more prominent events on the PGA Tour calendar. There are several reasons behind it and this event is generally played by the top-ranked players on the tour. Furthermore, one of the special things about this event is that it does not impose a cutline after 36-holes, meaning all players will go through to the weekend.

A regular PGA Tour event will impose a 36-hole cut after two rounds. This is usually done because more than 120 players start an event on a Thursday, and only a limited number are allowed to go through to the weekend.

Hence, a cutline helps in determining which players will advance and the others who won’t. However, there is no such rule when it comes to the CJ Cup. This tournament is one of the handful of events on the PGA Tour that does not have a cut after two rounds.

Why is there no cut at the CJ Cup?

Firstly, the CJ Cup is unlike any PGA Tour event. It has a restricted field. Only 78 players from the world compete every year as part of the eligibility criteria. That includes the Top 60 available players from the previous season’s FedExCup standings. So one can certainly imagine the type of quality that will be present every year at the CJ Cup.

This is the primary reason why there is no cut enforced at the CJ Cup. Since the starting field is limited to only 78 players, there is no real purpose for a cut after 36-holes. A PGA Tour event generally filters half the field after two rounds and such a method is not required in the case of the CJ Cup.

The filtered field already gives the players plenty of breathing space during the course of the event. Furthermore, it also gives a few players to turn around their game if they did not start well. Four rounds without a cut is a good practice in some events, and the CJ Cup benefits from it.

Where is the annual tournament hosted?

The CJ Cup is hosted at the fabulous Summit Club in Las Vegas. The Summit Club was opened in 2017 and sits a few miles near the Rock Canyon National Reservation Area. The layout plays out as a par-72 course spanning 7,422 yards

The Tom Fazio desert design is famous for its elevation changes and sits 3,000m above sea levels. Daunting winds can often disrupt a player’s momentum, let alone the danger of sand bunkers placed strategically.
