Jan Blachowicz: Nationality, Ethnicity and Pronunciation

Jan Blachowicz is easily one of the most powerful fighters UFC has witnessed. He is famous for knocking out his opponents in the octagon and no UFC or MMA fan can ignore his one-punch knockout ability. 

The 38-year-old fighter has quickly risen to fame and enjoys a massive fan following on social media. After overcoming hurdles in his early UFC career and proving all his doubters wrong, he thrived as a fighter and won the light heavyweight belt at UFC 253.

However, where is he from and how does one pronounce his name?

The 6’ 2’’ tall fighter is from Cieszyn, Poland, and was born to Polish parents. His name often confuses people as the pronunciation is different; Jan Blachowicz is pronounced as ‘Yan Blah-oh-veech’. He is the first male Polish UFC champion. He is also the second Polish UFC champion, after Joanna Jedrzejczyk– the former UFC strawweight champion.

 Born on 24th February 1983, Blachowicz always had a keen interest in martial arts; action movies inspired him. As a result, he started training in judo from a young age. When he made his MMA debut in 2007, he lost. However, he kept on training and moved past his early failures.

Before UFC, Blachowicz was a part of KSW. In November 2011, he won the KSW light heavyweight title. He was an integral part of the promotion until he decided to be a part of UFC in 2014. His debut fight was with Ilir Latifi, and he won by delivering a knockout punch. 

Blachowicz’s debut fight was smashing, but later on, he suffered four defeats in five fights. He turned this skid with a dominant four-fight winning run, before losing to Thiago Santos. After that, as he beat the likes of Luke Rockhold, Jacare Souza, Corey Anderson, Dominick Reyes, and Israel Adesanya

With an impressive record of knocking out fighters in the octagon, the Pole has become one of the most feared MMA fighters.

‘The Polish Power’ has already achieved a lot within a brief span of time by constantly improving and reinventing himself. He seems to have a natural knack for overcoming any difficulty. It would be exciting to see how the upcoming years of his career turn out.
