Jesy Nelson’s solo career has got off to a promising start in the charts as her debut single Boyz reached number four on the charts – despite an ongoing ‘blackfishing’ controversy and feud with her former Little Mix bandmates.

The track, which features Nicki Minaj and samples Diddy’s 2001 hit Bad Boys For Life – with the video including a cameo from the rapper – was released on October 8.

Despite promising initial reviews, the release of Boyz was soon overshadowed by criticism towards Jesy which escalated into major drama involving Nicki Minaj, Leigh-Anne Pinnock and the rest of Little Mix- with Westlife’s Shane Filan even getting involved.

Jesy was accused of making herself appear racially ambiguous and appropriating Black culture in the video.

The drama escalated when featured artist Nicki slammed Little Mix’s Leigh-Anne on an Instagram live with Jesy, watched by over 100,000 people, after leaked and unverified DMs purported to be from Leigh-Anne called Jesy ‘horrible’ and a ‘blackfish’.

Despite all the controversy, Jesy’s solo debut has done well on the Official Singles Chart, landing at number four and representing this week’s highest new entry.

The chart-topping success marks Elton’s first number one single in the UK in 16 years, since his feature on 2Pac’s 2005 single Ghetto Gospel, released after the rapper’s death.

For Dua, Cold Heart represents her third UK number one following New Rules in 2017 and One Kiss in 2018.
