Grand Designs viewers roast £700k luxury home that ‘looks like an Asda’ and is the ‘ugliest house they’ve ever seen’

Imagine you spent £700k building your dream home only for Grand Designs viewers to compare it to a supermarket. Well, that’s what happened to Geoff Wood.

The 63-year-old appeared on Wednesday’s episode of Channel 4’s Grand Designs, which saw him build a ‘bungalow on stilts’ in Essex.

Following a divorce, Geoff sold his house in London and the family home in Spain before moving to a caravan on site to save up the funds for his big build.

He struggled emotionally as the project took longer than he’d hoped and delays forced him to spend two Christmases in his ‘cold and damp’ caravan.

After battling the stress of a solo build, plus the pandemic, Geoff finally finished his new home. However, not everyone was impressed.

Viewers were quick to jump on Twitter to share their thoughts, and it’s safe to say they didn’t hold back.

‘He’s building Costa del Asda,’ one viewer wrote.

While another disagreed, their comparison wasn’t much better: ‘It looks more like they’re constructing a new Aldi warehouse rather than a house.’

One viewer referred to the build as ‘awful’ and ‘one of the worst houses I’ve ever seen.’

Twitter users said it looked like a ‘Grandma’s house’ (Picture: Channel 4)

Not everyone was so brutal, though, as one viewer argued: ‘Well if Geoff’s happy that’s all that matters. His cash, his time, his house.’

Another sympathetic Tweeter wrote: ‘Must be heartbreaking when a design you put so much into isn’t executed well.’

As per, presenter Kevin McCloud was on hand to offer support, but seemed to question Geoff’s priorities at one stage when he decided to go and play a round of golf on ‘the most stressful day’ of the build.’

Geoff was pleased with his new home nonetheless, after putting the build on hold for so long and feeling ‘frustrated’ by ‘having a million pounds in the bank and not being able to spend it’ when Covid hit, which doesn’t seem like the worst thing in the world.

Viewers did end up warming to Geoff’s personality, though, and were rooting for his project to be successful… even if they did call it an ‘old people’s home’ afterwards.
