‘Utter Disaster’ – Fans Outraged at CJ Cup Coverage of Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler

At the CJ Cup this year, Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler entered the final round as the top two contenders for the title. Both PGA Tour stars will be facing off in what looks like a fantastic finale, and will look to win the $1,755,000 prize.

Unfortunately, though, fans might not be able to watch over two hours of the event live.

Yes, you read that right. An event with McIlroy and Fowler in the final round, with a $9.5 prize pool, will not be shown live for the first two hours and ten minutes. It goes without saying that fans were unhappy with the situation.

I don’t want to get into the whole coverage debate BUT what I will say:

Rory McIlroy vs. Rickie Fowler final group on a Sunday at a SICK course in Las Vegas and we’re missing the first 2.5 hours of the round — absolutely preposterous and insane. Don’t they wanna make money?

Twitter reacts to CJ Cup final round not being covered live for two hours

When popular players are leading the leaderboard going into the final round, fans are looking forward to some impressive shots and a few entertaining hours.

However, if the event is not covered, fans are surely going to be disappointed. As the CJ Cup reaches its final round this weekend, fans expressed their irritation over the event not being shown live.

NBC and the PGA Tour, per reports, were not able to predict that they would get a pairing like Fowler and McIlroy as their top two.

It is important to note that only 78 players play in the event, with 24 of the world’s top 30 players playing at The Summit Club. Despite the odds, a high-profile pairing like Fowler and McIlroy could have been expected, especially as players like Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, and Collin Morikawa were also participating.

I agree… this is totally stupid. At least have it on NBC sports gold or something…

Don’t they want to grow the game is my question….

It’s dumb for sure…..just like handing out $50k for doing what the pros are supposed to be doing, a la play 15 tournament minimums….

It’s an absolute joke

Best case scenario for those, including me who root for Rick. Won’t have to endure what we know is likely.

gonna get worse before it gets better as well…

An utter disaster. I tend to exaggerate and prefer hyperbole but this is not that. This is a fucking disaster for golf fans

That is golf coverage lmao,” wrote one fan, clearly mocking how the event will be covered. “They heard us saying that coverage couldn’t possibly get any worse and took it as a challenge,” wrote another. Many fans even believed it was not fair to the best golfers in the world, who would have wanted their efforts to be recognised by the fans.

Does this affect the game’s growth?

Many added that covering an event well will also help the game grow. Over the past few years, many efforts have been made to make golf a more widely appreciated game, the Tokyo Olympics also playing its part in the same. Certain fans added that the poor golf coverage was the reason they refused to watch golf.

That being said, fans are still looking forward to the event, interested to see who wins the title. While McIlroy won the Wells Fargo Championship earlier this year, Fowler is yet to secure a win since his Waste Management Phoenix Open victory in 2019.
