Y: The Last Man has been cancelled by FX after just one season, its showrunner has confirmed.

The sci-fi drama, which airs on Disney Plus in the UK, only arrived in September but won’t be returning for new episodes via FX on Hulu.

Showrunner Eliza Clark confirmed the news on Sunday, while also revealing that she hoped the show would continue on another network.

Writing on Twitter, she said: ‘We have learned that we will not be moving forward with FX on Hulu for Season 2 of Y: The Last Man.

‘I have never in my life been more committed to a story, and there is so much more left to tell.’

Every episode of the season was directed by woman and the heads of department working on the programme are also predominantly women.

‘We had a gender diverse team of brilliant artists, led by women at almost every corner of our production. Producers, writers, directors, cinematographers, production design, costume design, stunt coordination, and more.

‘It is the most collaborative, creatively fulfilling and beautiful thing I have ever been a part of. We don’t want it to end,’ Eliza added.

Based on the acclaimed graphic novel series of the same name by Brian K. Vaughn and Pia Guerra, the show takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where a mysterious event has wiped out every mammal with a Y chromosome, except one cisgender man, Yorick Brown (Ben Schnetzer).

The series followed the survivors as they try to make sense of what happened and build something better out of what they lost.

Diane Lane, Ashley Romans, Olivia Thirlby, Juliana Canfield, Elliot Fletcher, Marin Ireland, Amber Tamblyn and Diana Bang also star in the series.

Y: The Last Man is available to stream now on Disney+ in the UK
