Rory McIlroy was unhappy with his game during the previous season. Inconsistency and attempts to change his swing in order to emulate fellow golfers marred the Irishman’s game. However, after a series of poor performances, realization finally struck him.

Rory McIlroy opens up about CJ Cup win
In his winner’s press conference, McIlroy revealed the change in his mentality and strategy following a poor Ryder Cup performance, where he went a 1-3-0. Let’s take a look at what he said.
When asked how his mentality and game have changed post the biennial cup loss, he said, “Yeah, so, I don’t even think it’s post Ryder Cup related. I think it’s just post the last six months related… I feel like the last couple of weeks I’ve realized that just being me is good enough.”
“And maybe the last few months I was trying- not trying to be someone else- but maybe trying to add things to my game or take things away from my game,” he added. “You know when I, when I do the things that I do well, you know, this is what I’m capable of. I’m capable of, you know, winning a lot of events on the PGA Tour. And, you know, being the best player in the world; something we talked about at the start of the week as well.”
McIlroy said, “So, it’s just a matter of me getting back to playing golf, and playing golf my way. And that starts with being creative and being visual and maybe sort of, you know, sifting through the technical thoughts, and not maybe being as technical.”
