Everything you need to know about Top Boy series 4

The crime drama Top Boy seemed to come to an end after Channel 4 cancelled it back in 2013.
But the show – starring Ashley Walters and Kano Robinson – got a new life on Netflix, after finding a celebrity fan in Canadian rapper Drake, who joined the show as an executive producer.
The third season was released in 2019, and it was met with critical acclaim, proving to be worth the six-year wait.
Ever since, fans have been wondering when the show will return for a fourth season, particularly after Drake confirmed it would happen way back in January 2020.
So, is there a release date for fans to look forward to?

Sadly there is no known release date for season four of Top Boy – but it is definitely happening.
The new series was meant to start shooting in May 2020 – but like many productions last year – it was postponed following the Covid-19 outbreak.
Cameras were confirmed to be rolling back in December 2020 by stars Walters and Robinson, with the series going by the name of season two, what with it being its second series on Netflix
On the shoot, Walters said ‘because of Covid, we’ve lost so many locations so we’re just having to move with what we can. One day we’re doing [episode] six, then we’re back to one, then to three.
‘It’s been difficult, but rest assured to everyone listening or watching, we’ve got another banger for ya. It’s definitely going to be good.’
While it is looking less likely that the show will return in 2021, who knows what surprises Netflix may have up its sleeve.

What is the plot of Top Boy series 4?
There are question marks over the fate of many characters in Top Boy, which has made fans even more excited for more episodes of the show.
While exact plot details have been kept under wraps, showrunner Ronan Bennett has discussed his ambitions for the show’s future.
‘We have our core and we have the characters and the world, but we also want to refresh it with staying true to what our fans love about the show, but also expanding the world and surprising them’ he said.
In an interview with the Radio Times, Bennett said that Sully (Robinson), will continue to battle with his emotions following the death of Jason (Ricky Smarts) stating that post-traumatic stress disorder ‘would be a really interesting thing to explore in Sully.’

‘I remember being at the keyboard, working through after the fire in which Sully barely escapes with his life and his friend gets killed and I was kind of typing away and I put my hand to my face in the way that we’re told not to in these COVID times and I remember smelling charcoal on my fingers and thinking about that and just going with that idea that what if that is a sign for him [of the fire] and it’s in his head – this smell.’
He continued: ‘And Dushane says to him: ‘If you can smell it when you sleep, it’s not real.’ It may not be real to Dushane but it’s very real to Sully and I think that helped us just get beyond the idea of somebody who in season one and two was quick-tempered and quick to use his fists.’
Walters, speaking with Metro.co.uk, added that ‘for the fans that love it and enjoyed it, it’s going to be great for them as the stories going to be bigger and better, we are pushing the boundaries a bit.’
Who is in the Top Boy series 4 cast?
While a full cast list has yet to be revealed, some members of the cast have already confirmed their involvement in the next chapter of Top Boy.
Walters and Kano will be back as Dushane Hill and Gerald ‘Sully’ Sullivan respectively as the lead pair of the show.
Netflix also tweeted to confirm that Michael Ward’s Jamie and Simbi ‘Little Simz’ Ajikawo’s Shelley will return, with the latter being spotted on the East London set alongside Kano
Ward also confirmed his casting by teasing the script on Instagram, saying ‘this is gonna be even more special than the first.’
Fans will have to wait and see if the likes of Jasmine Jobson (Jaq), Ashley Thomas (Jermaine), David ‘Dave’ Omoregie (Modie), Kadeem Ramsay (Kit), Lisa Dwan (Lizzie), and Saffron Hocking (Lauryn) will all be back too.
