“He Misunderstood Me He Did Not Know Who I Was”-Colby Covington Says Dana White Had Beef With Him

Colby Covington went toe-to-toe with Kamaru Usman for the welterweight belt at UFC 245. The two men put on arguably one of the greatest welterweight title fights ever. And a few weeks from now fans will be able to see an en epic fight between two evenly matched welterweights once again.

Ahead of his much-anticipated rematch with Kamaru Usman, ‘Chaos’ sat down for an interview with Brett Okamoto of ESPN. In the interview, Covington shared his thoughts on how his change in personality was received by the UFC brass. He said, “Yeah I remember Hunter calling me right after the fight and he was just like man, you just put on one of the greatest fights I have ever seen live. Me and Dana have had a lot of beef throughout our career. He misunderstood me. He did not know who I was and what I was trying to do.”

‘Chaos’ continued, “And I think he did not respect me at that time. But after that fight he respected me and he showed it in the media saying that it was one of his top 3 or top 5 greatest fights he had seen live. That showed me a lot, that a guy in Dana White who is the bossman and we’ve kind of had a bad drift in the past. But he was able to put that aside and really say the true thoughts behind the fight. And not give a biased opinion.”

Colby Covington and his change in character

It is very well documented that Covington was not the same person he is today when he joined the UFC. ‘Chaos’ at first was a subdued and shy individual who never trash-talked any of his peers in the UFC. However, this did not help him in selling PPVs.

Once Covington caught wind that the UFC was planning on cutting him, he quickly turned things around and embraced the role of the trash-talking, polarizing character that he is today. While this has surely increased his value as a fighter, it has come at a cost as well. Covington has made a lot of enemies in the promotion with the stuff he has said on multiple occasions.
