‘Never Going to Be Perfect’ – Romain Grosjean Admits He’s Still Recovering From the Near-Death F1 Crash

Romain Grosjean is one of the drivers who never managed to receive a proper send-off from F1, as the Frenchman rather had to battle his way through a near-death experience.

Hardly a couple of races away from the 2020 season showdown, Grosjean ended up in what was arguably the biggest crash of the decade. It wasn’t just the impact that put his life at massive risk, but also the blazing inferno that engulfed the former Haas driver.

He suffered massive burns on both his hands, with the left taking the biggest blow. Of course, Grosjean is now back in action, competing in the American racing league, IndyCar Series. However, he revealed that, even after almost a year, the recovery phase is still not over.

What did Romain Grosjean say?

As reported by GrandPrix.com.au, Grosjean revealed that his left hand will never recover completely, as it suffered a rather severe blow.

“The right hand is 100% good, I just need to put some sunscreen on when I go out in the sun since it’s kind of brand new skin, the left hand is the one that got a little bit more damaged… There is still a bit of work to be done but it’s never going to be perfect. It is painful but you learn to live with it,” he said.

Of course, the crash could’ve been way less severe if not for the rupture of the fuel pod. This eventually led to the entire F1 car going up in flames, lighting up the entire Bahrain International Circuit. But, it was only when Grosjean ran out of the fire the world heaved a sigh of relief.

I can live pretty much normally: Grosjean

The Frenchman affirmed that he is back to leading his normal life, albeit with some restrictions to avoid stalling the recovery of his left hand.

“To be fair, I can play with my kids, I can drive a car, I can live pretty much normally, there are a couple of things that I’m slightly restricted but it 95% works well,” Grosjean concluded, speaking to the ‘In the Fast Lane’ podcast.

Overall, what a crash that was! If not for the immense safety measures currently in place in F1, there is little to no chance that he would’ve made it out of the scene alive. Well, he’s here, and he’s going strong in his rookie Indy campaign. So, can he sign off the 2021 season in the top 10?
