Squid Game: Will there be a season 2?

Squid Game has been one of the small screen success stories of 2021, smashing records on Netflix to become the biggest ever series launch in the streaming platform’s history.

The nine-part Korean drama was watched by over 111m viewers worldwide in its first 28 days of release – outdoing Bridgerton, which nabbed 82m views at the end of 2020.

Squid Game follows hundreds of desperate people as they are invited to take part in mystery games for a huge sum of money – except things quickly turn deadly as participants battle for their lives as well as the jackpot.

Given its popularity, people are naturally hoping that the show might return for a second outing – but will we be getting a season 2?

Here’s what you need to know…

Will there be a season 2 of Squid Game?

As it stands, Netflix has yet to confirm that the show will be returning for a second series.

However that hasn’t stopped series creator Hwang Dong-huyk from thinking ahead as to how the saga might continue.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Hwang said: ‘There are some other stories in the series that have not been addressed. For example, the story of the police officer and the story of his brother, The Front Man.

‘I could also go into the story of that recruiter in the suit who plays the game of ddakji with Gi-hun and gives him the card in the first episode.’

He added: ‘I’ll just say there are a lot of possibilities out there for season 2 storylines.’

Meanwhile, Netflix recently teased its followers on Instagram, following the social media platform’s outage.

When it came back online they posted a picture of the show’s surviving characters, with the caption: ‘IG is back just in time bc we were ‘bout to…’

But while the move sent its followers wild, they confirmed nothing at that stage – so we’ll just have to keep our eyes peeled for an announcement.

In the mean time if you’ve not yet seen for yourself what all the fuss is about, you can watch season one on Netflix now.
