Debra Messing has issued an apology for questioning why Kim Kardashian had been chosen to host comedy sketch show Saturday Night Live, saying that she ‘was not intending to troll’ the reality star.

On October 9, Kim, 41, hosted SNL for the very first time, taking part in skits including one based on Aladdin and another in which she played her older sister, Kourtney Kardashian.

The businesswoman didn’t hold back from roasting her family, poking fun at Kanye West amid their divorce and addressing the rumours that her family have undergone plastic surgery procedures.

Ahead of Kim’s hosting debut, Debra, 53, expressed confusion over her inclusion on the show, explaining that usually people who are chosen to host are performers who have something to promote.

The Will and Grace star wrote on Twitter: ‘Why Kim Kardashian? I mean, I know she is a cultural icon, but SNL has hosts, generally, who are performers who are there to promote a film, TV show, or album launch. Am I missing something?’

In response to claims that she was trolling Kim, Debra said that was not her intention, describing her as a ‘phenomenon’.

During a virtual appearance on the Tamron Hall talk show in the US, she said: ‘Well, I was not intending to troll her and you know if anybody took it that way, I apologise. That was never my intention. She is this phenomenon. I mean, you know, she is a cultural icon.’

Debra explained that having grown up with SNL, she loves comedy and understands that the show has followed a ‘formula’ for decades.

‘And I noticed that they changed the formula, and I was like, “Oh, does she have a new TV show coming out? Does she have a book coming out? Is she in a movie?” And she didn’t have anything coming out,’ the actor said, adding that Keeping Up With The Kardashians had recently wrapped filming.

Debra said that when she watched Kim on SNL, she thought that she was ‘amazing’, saying that she was ‘rooting for her’.

‘If you know me, and you follow me, then you know that I consistently lift up women. I support women. So you know, I hope that people understand that was never my intention,’ she said.

While many people lauded Kim for her performance on the show, she also sparked controversy for a joke she made about OJ Simpson in her monologue.

Tanya Brown, the sister of OJ Simpson’s ex-wife Nicole Brown, who was found dead in 1994, heavily criticised the joke, saying that she thought it was in ‘poor taste’.

Saturday Night Live airs on NBC in the US.
