Gavin & Stacey star Joanna Page has revealed that Ruth Jones and James Corden keep the cast of the beloved TV series completely in the dark about the possibility of its return as she discussed the show’s potential future.

In 2019, Gavin & Stacey returned for a one-off Christmas special, almost a decade after its final episode aired.

The festive special saw Nessa (Ruth) propose to Smithy (James), ending on a cliffhanger as fans theorised about whether or not the pair will get married.

While speaking to Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary on Thursday’s This Morning, Joanna, who played the titular character of Stacey in the comedy, was asked whether she thinks it will ever come back, amid continued speculation.

The Love Actually actor revealed that she and her fellow cast members never know what’s going on until Ruth and James, who co-created Gavin & Stacey, give them a ring.

‘I don’t know! I mean, we never hear anything ‘cause Ruth and James don’t tell us anything until we get a phone call that it’s happening again. But I’ve got absolutely no idea,’ she said.

‘When we finished we thought “right ok, that is the end”, but they’re very clever, they’ve left it open. So I could see it going either way,’ she added.

While the future of Gavin & Stacey appears to be remaining up in the air for the time being, Joanna recently said that she believes the entire cast would be up for a comeback.

During an interview with The Sun’s TV magazine, she said that thinks the ‘whole cast’ would be up for a return, adding: ‘It’s such a joy to film.’

Earlier this year, James teased Gavin & Stacey’s eventual return, saying that it would be a ‘shame’ to leave it on the proposal cliffhanger.

Speaking to Zoe Ball on Radio 2, the chat show host said: ‘As it stands there aren’t any plans to do more, but that’s not to say that there isn’t the want or the inclination to do one.

‘When we wrote that last special we never thought whether we’d make another, but that special ends on such a…it ends so open I think it would be a shame to leave it there.’

In August, Joanna announced that she was expecting her fourth child, describing her pregnancy news as a ‘surprise’.

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
