Good news for The Sopranos fans, the world of Tony Soprano could be coming back to screens soon as HBO Max are looking to create a prequel TV series.

Following the success of prequel film, The Many Saints of Newark, creator David Chase has been approached to create a sequel that would help viewers continue to enjoy the Sopranos universe.

Speaking to Deadline about the potential project, WarnerMedia Studios CEO Ann Sarnoff stated: ‘We’re talking to David about a new series, Sopranos related, on HBO Max.’

Meanwhile, Chase claimed that if he was to return to The Sopranos world, the story would take place after the film (set in the late 1960s and 1970s) and before the original series (which starts around 1998).

‘There’s only one way that I would do it, and that was if Terry [Winter] and I could write the script together. That I would do,’ he explained.

Sarnoff added that the final decision as to whether the project becomes a series or a feature film has not been made but showed interest in creating a Sopranos prequel series.

The Sopranos (1999-2007) centred on mob boss Tony Soprano (in an iconic performance by James Gandolfini), the depressed, brutal yet lovable head of a contemporary Italian-American criminal family.

When Gandolfini died of a heart attack in 2013, aged 51, any sequel series was unthinkable – and so new projects have been prequels instead.

The Many Saints Of Newark charts the relationship between the notorious Tony and his uncle Alessandro Nivola (Dickie Moltisanti).

The film stars Michael Gandolfini as a young Tony Soprano, the role previously held by his late father James Gandolfini.

Set between 1967 and ’71 this delves into the influences that shaped a young Anthony Soprano, then a child and teenager, into the complex character we love and admire (and fear).

Rival gangsters are starting to challenge the ruling DiMeo crime family and race riots are tearing apart the city as an impressionable Tony is forced to become the man of the house, aged 11, when his gangster dad, ‘Johnny Boy’, is arrested in front of his eyes and sent to jail for five years.
