Rickie Fowler on Jordan Spieth’s Resurgence – ‘It Was Inspiring for Me to See’

The Waste Management Phoenix Open in 2019 was Rickie Fowler’s last PGA Tour win. After a difficult 2020, the 32-year-old is yet to win another title. However, Fowler has not yet given up yet and is determined to bounce back.

During a recent interview, Fowler spoke with Michael Breed about his game and Jordan Spieth’s influence, amongst other things. Flower’s performance at the CJ Cup was some of his best over the past few months, close to a win as he entered Round 4. However, as Rory McIlroy went ahead to secure his 20th title, Fowler finished T3.

Rickie Fowler on Jordan Spieth and overcoming his bad patch

Fowler, who is aware of the game’s ups and downs, gave the examples of Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus, both of whom are PGA Tour greats and have both gone through bad patches themselves. What inspired him, though, is Jordan Spieth and where the 28-year-old is now.

“So seeing and being alongside friends going through downtime at similar times and kinda helping each other through things. That’s been – I wouldn’t say fun – but we can all relate. Anyone playing at a high level could relate,” he said.

Unfortunately for Fowler, his ‘downtime’ has been going on for a little longer than he would have liked.  However, he said, “But I’m ready to move on past this and play some golf.”

What Fowler is referring to is Spieth’s Valero Texas Open win held at the TPC San Antonio Oaks Course. The 12-time PGA Tour winner won for the first time in 1,351 days, that too in his home state. One can imagine why Fowler, who has not won since 2019, feels inspired.

If we look at Fowler’s past few months, he has been struggling on the course. The five-time PGA Tour winner did not make the Ryder Cup team, and also missed the FedEx Cup playoffs for the first time in his career. “Everyone’s gone through ups and downs in golf,” he said. “When you’re in those low points, there’s times when you wonder like: Am I ever going to be back in that position?”

Following the CJ Cup, Fowler is headed to Japan for the Zozo Championship. However, do you think he can turn his fate around?
