“They Were in Tears”: Cameron Norrie Reveals Parents Emotions During His Indian Wells Victory

The new British No.1 Cameron Norrie lifted the biggest title of his career, the Indian Wells Masters 2021. Naturally, it was a moment for his parents to be proud of him. But because he lost the opening set, both David and Helen Norrie got nervous and couldn’t watch the rest of the final. Later on, the 26-year-old revealed what his parents did while stamped his name in the desert.

After dropping the first set, Norrie found his shots and took the match’s control from his opponent, Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili. He then went on to defeat him 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. Accordingly, Norrie also became the first British professional to win the Indian Wells men’s singles title. However, while he wrote tennis history, his parents were walking their dogs out of nervousness.

Cameron Norrie on his parents’ emotions during Indian Wells final

First of all, Norrie admitted that his parents did not watch the final because they were so nervous. However, a phone call from him after winning Indian Wells Masters made his parents emotional.

“They actually didn’t watch the match,” Norrie told Sky Sports News. “They were too nervous to be watching, so I spoke to them after, they were in tears.”

Naturally, out of curiosity, the 26-year-old inquired what they did if not watch his biggest final. “I was like, so what did you guys do when I was playing?” Norrie continued. “They said when you lost the first set, we had to go out and walk the dogs, we were so nervous, we didn’t know what to do, so they re-watched it knowing the result so they could relax.”

Indeed, sometimes watching a final can make one more nervous than playing in one. But later on, Norrie added that they were both happy and his mother was in tears. He also mentioned that it was “so special” to speak to them after getting the title.
