Xbox Series X 512GB and 2TB storage expansion cards confirmed for Christmas

Microsoft and Segate has officially announced two new storage expansions for the Xbox Series X, with an unexpected new 2TB card.

Leaks had already revealed that a new, smaller 500GB expansion card is on its way for the Xbox Series X/S but the official announcement today has also revealed a new 2TB card as well.

Up until now a 1TB Seagate card had been the only way to expand your storage options on Xbox Series X/S but the prospect of a 500GB (actually 512GB) card was welcomed by fans, for the obvious reason that it’s cheaper.

The Xbox Wire blog only has US prices at the moment though, with the 512GB card selling for $140 (£100) and the 2TB for $400 (£290).

The current 1TB card is $220 in the US and £220 here, so it’s likely that the new cards will be the same numerical price here, i.e. £140 for the 512GB and £400 for the 2TB.

The 512GB card will be released in the US in mid-November and the 2TB in early December. There’s no guarantee either will make it to Europe this year but Microsoft hasn’t warned of any delay so far.

The expansion cards are important because Xbox Series X/S games, which expect to use the console’s superfast SSD, can’t run from an ordinary USB drive and need the Seagate’s faster Velocity Architecture tech.

That’s a bigger problem for the cheaper Xbox Series S, which doesn’t have a disc drive and has less than 400GB of internal storage.

Whether other similar expansion cards from other companies will be officially announced as Xbox Series X/S compatible is unclear, but it seems bound to happen sooner or later.
