Former NFL Defensive Player of the Year JJ Watt Reveals Real Reason He Left Houston Texans
JJ Watt can thank his lucky stars for his move to Arizona Cardinals. The former NFL Defensive Player of the Year left his former franchise and head to Arizona, the only undefeated franchise in the league right now. In a recent interview, Watt revealed he left Houston Texans because he knew the franchise would go down the drain.
JJ Watt admits he left Houston based on an intuition
Houston Texans are having a torrid season so far. Despite an opening day win against Jacksonville Jaguars, the Texans have looked horrid this season. Their 1-5 record right now has effectively ruled them out of the playoffs. Unless Tennessee and Indianapolis mess up their seasons horribly, the Texans can kiss their playoff hopes goodbye.
In his last season in Houston, JJ Watt picked up five sacks, a disappointing amount given his MVP worthy performances the years prior. He requested his release at the end of the 2021 season, and the Texans stupidly agreed to let him go. After almost a decade of keeping the Texans afloat, JJ Watt was a free bird, and he flocked to the Cardinals.
Former #Texans DL @JJWatt asked by @sarahbarshop re: his decision to leave “… did you get a sense that there would be this much turnover & this is what the Texans season would look like?”
JJ-“Umm…Yeah.”
Is that one of the reasons you decided to go somewhere else?

Right now, Watt is enjoying one of the best seasons of his career. In a recent pre-game interview, Watt accepted he left Houston because he knew the franchise would go down the drain. He and his Cardinals’ teammate DeAndre Hopkins killed it in Houston, but they are now Arizona’s star players.

How does JJ feel about facing his old team?
Ahead of Cardinals vs Texans this week, JJ Watt discussed his feelings about facing his former team. Although he left Houston just after the 2020 season ended, he claims the current Houston Texans squad is unrecognisable. He talked about it to ESPN, where he claimed he isn’t facing the same Texans he played for.
“There’s obviously something more to it. I don’t think that it’s what people may think it is because, I mean, you look at the roster and you look at the guys that are there, I mean it’s been so massively turned over that there’s only a handful of guys that are even there from last year that I played with. So, it’s not like, I’m like, ‘Oh, I want to go and beat my old team’ or ‘Oh, I can’t wait to face this guy,’ because it’s not the same team. It’s not the same organization that I remember and that I was a part of.”
The upcoming fixture is a crucial fixture for both Houston and Arizona. The Cardinals will want to extend their unbeaten run as they march to the Super Bowl. On the other hand, the Texans will want to turn their fortune around against the most impressive team in the NFL. If Houston pulls of a shock win against Arizona, it’ll be the biggest upset of the season.
