Nintendo cancels Christmas by delaying Advance Wars remake

This is the real war on Christmas (Pic: Nintendo)

Prepare yourself for the worst video game news of the year: the Advance Wars remake has been pushed into 2022.

We’re normally forgiving of video game delays, since it allows extra development time and ensures, that the final product can be the best it can be. But we’re taking this one as a personal sleight since Nintendo is denying us a remake of the best game ever: Advance Wars.

Titled Advance Wars 1+2: Reboot Camp, it’s actually two remakes in one, giving strategy fans old and new the chance to experience both of these classic Game Boy Advance games with a fresh coat of paint.

Nintendo hasn’t stated exactly why the game will no longer release on December 3 as planned (it’s payback for all those times we slagged off Kirby, isn’t it?). All it says is that it’s now aiming for a spring 2022 release window, and it simply needs ‘a little more time for fine tuning’.

Hello, troops! #AdvanceWars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp, which was set to launch on 12/3, will now release for #NintendoSwitch in spring 2022. The game just needs a little more time for fine tuning. You’ll be battling with Andy & friends soon! Thanks for your patience. pic.twitter.com/dSi8VSsxTH

Nintendo hasn’t really said anything about the game since its initial announcement but it’s being handled by Shantae developer WayForward (original developer Intelligent Systems is probably too busy with a new Fire Emblem or something) and, aside from two campaigns, will feature wireless and online multiplayer.

There sadly hasn’t been a new entry in the series since 2008’s Advance Wars: Days Of Ruin on the Nintendo DS. The first two games did see a re-release on the Wii U’s Virtual Console, in 2014 and 2015, though so Nintendo never completely forgot about the series.

Not only do many credit the first game as one of the best games ever made but designer Kentaro Nishimura, in a 2010 interview with Edge, says that Advance Wars’ success is what led to Nintendo finally deciding to release Fire Emblem games in the West.

With any luck, the remakes will be successful enough to convince Nintendo to greenlight a brand new game. In the meantime, we’re going to go hibernate for the winter.

Advance Wars 1+2: Reboot Camp releases for Nintendo Switch in spring 2022.
