Olivia Newton-John has shared an update on her stage four breast cancer journey, explaining that while she ‘has her pains’, she’s currently ‘feeling pretty good’.

In 1992, Olivia, 73, was diagnosed with breast cancer.

The Grease star has since experienced two recurrences of the disease, first in 2013 and then in 2017, when it had progressed to stage four and spread to her bones.

Olivia, who is an advocate for breast cancer research, spoke to broadcaster Hoda Kotb about her journey on NBC’s The Today Show in the US, emphasising the ‘unknown destinations’ that anyone who is diagnosed with cancer experiences.

The pair shared a bonding moment as Hoda recalled her own breast cancer diagnosis in 2007, from which she has since recovered.

Hoda explained how after finding a lump, she didn’t want to know about the treatments she was undergoing, stating that ‘being naive sometimes is a blessing’.

‘I agree with you, and I’m really sorry you went through that, I didn’t know that about you. I’m sorry. Are you well now, you feeling good?’ Olivia responded.

Hoda immediately became emotional, thanking the British-Australian singer and actor for her concern.

‘Yes I’m feeling good. By the way, I’m just going to pause for a second, another wonderful thing about you is what you just did there. Thank you. Thank you for asking,’ she said.

‘Oh of course. We’re sisters. You know, anyone that’s gone on this journey with cancer, it’s unknown destinations and surprises and turns,’ Olivia replied.

When asked how she is currently doing with her breast cancer treatment, Olivia expressed her gratitude for her husband of 13 years John Easterling, who grows cannabis to help ease her pain.

‘Right now I’m feeling pretty good. I have my days, I have my pains. But the cannabis that my husband grows for me has been such a huge part of my healing, and so I’m a very lucky person,’ she said.

Earlier this year, Olivia paid tribute after learning that a ‘very special’ nurse who took care of her during her breast cancer treatment, Emma Cohen, had died.

Cohen, who was the chair of the board of Cancer Nurses Society of Australia, was reported to have died ‘after a short illness’.

‘My heart is still in shock and so saddened to learn of the sudden loss of the very special Emma Cohen. Emma took care of me at a very vulnerable time in my life when I was a patient on her unit at the @onjcancercentre in 2018,’ Olivia said in a post shared on social media.

She continued: ‘Emma had such a generous spirit and a warm and loving heart – I will miss seeing her lovely face at the Centre and send my love and deepest condolences to her friends and family.’

The Today Show airs on NBC in the US.
