Line of Duty series 7 ‘is happening’ but it might be ‘years’ before new episodes air

Line of Duty fans are desperate for news on whether they might get a series 7, and there’s seems to be a promising update at last.

The show’s sixth series came to a dramatic conclusion earlier this year, with AC-12’s anti-corruption unit uncovering Ian Buckells (Nigel Boyle) as the identity of ‘H’ aka The Fourth Man.

The penultimate episode became the most-watched of the drama, seeing 11million fans tune in, and the series finale smashed all the records a week later, with an average of 12.8million.

But with fans still left with questions unanswered after a particularly dramatic run of episodes, it’s been reported there could be a series seven to come of the BAFTA-award winning drama.

A show insider told The Daily Star: ‘Another series is happening. This is the news millions of fans have been hoping for.’

The publication reports other details, including the storylines and filming dates, are yet to be finalised if it were to come back, meaning it wouldn’t get the imminent return we’re certain many viewers would want to see.

The source added: ‘A lot of stuff still needs to be agreed and it is likely to take a while.

‘Fans will probably have to wait a few years before it airs on TV.’

BBC’s controller of drama, Piers Wenger recently fuelled speculation there would be more, explaining how much the broadcaster would love new episodes.

‘I would love to see both [Line of Duty and Bodyguard] return,’ Wenger told press at a recent BBC drama showcase. ‘You know, Jed is thinking but I can’t really say much more than that. He hasn’t committed to writing either of them.’

Wenger added how Mercurio would prefer to wait until Covid-19 was no longer ‘a thing’ before committing to writing any new episodes, after the impact the pandemic had on the production of the latest series.

Last month, the show scooped its first two National Television Awards for returning drama and the award for special recognition and if this is anything to go by, there’s surely some unfinished business Mercurio can find from AC12 yet to be unearthed…

Line of Duty series 1-6 can be streamed in full on BBC iPlayer now.
