“Do It Down the Road”: Daniil Medvedev Optimistic About Beating Novak Djokovic’s No.1 Ranking in Future
While Novak Djokovic making it to the finals of all four slams and winning three of them is an exceptional achievement, Daniil Medvedev defeating the Serb in the US Open finals was significant in terms of the future of men’s singles tennis.
For long, the success in slams belonged to the likes of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer. Dominic Thiem’s US Open victory against Zverev gave hope to other youngsters like Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Medvedev managed to reach the finals of Australian Open this year but lost to Djokovic in straight sets. But, the Russian got back by winning the US Open against the no.1 player. Now, the race for year-end top spot becomes interesting.
Talking about his intention to grab the no.1 spot from Djokovic, Medvedev made it clear that the Serb absolutely deserves to stay on top.

Daniil Medvedev hopes to clinch Djokovic’s no.1 ranking at the year-end championships in Turin
“Though Novak did not play several Masters this year, he won three Slams and was in the final of the fourth, so it is logical that he is still No. 1. If I’ll catch up with him this year, excellent, but if not I will try to do it down the road”, commented the Russian.
Ahead of the Paris Masters, Medvedev had a great chance to inch closer to Djokovic in terms of ranking points at the Indian Wells Masters. With the Serb’s exit, it was expected of Medvedev to clinch the title and grab 1000 points.
But, the Russian lost to Grigor Dimitrov in the fourth round and also announced his withdrawal from the ATP Kremlin Cup.

“It’s not only fatigue, there were a couple of things I felt in Indian Wells. There is nothing serious, but I don’t want to talk about them. Since the Olympics, I have not returned home—for two and a half months, I was in the States”, Medvedev mentioned in a press conference in Moscow.

The advantage is definitely with Djokovic for the year-end no.1 spot as he will be making a comeback at the Paris Masters and will eventually play the World Tour Finals in Turin.
Winning titles at Paris and Turin will be the target for Daniil Medvedev but the likes of Stefanos Tsitsipas, Andrey Rublev, Alexander Zverev alongside Novak Djokovic will make it difficult for the Russian to win these two big events.
