Hailey Bieber ‘heartbroken’ as she speaks out following uncle Alec Baldwin’s fatal shooting of Halyna Hutchins on Rust set

Hailey Bieber has spoken out after her uncle Alec Baldwin accidentally fired a fatal shot at cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of his new movie Rust.

The model, 24, is the daughter of Stephen Baldwin, Alec’s brother.

Hailey took to Instagram stories on Saturday night where she said she was ‘heartbroken’ over the tragic incident which took Hutchins’ life.

She said she was ‘sending all [her] love to the family of Halyna Hutchins’, adding: ‘This is a truly unimaginable and devastating tragedy’.

‘My thoughts are also with Joel Souza as he recovers,’ she said. ‘I am absolutely heartbroken for everyone involved.’

Director of photography Hutchins, 42, was killed on the set of western film Rust when Alec discharged a prop gun during filming, reportedly hitting her in the stomach with a projectile.

The film’s director Joel Souza was also injured but has since been released from hospital.

Award-winning actor Alec, who was starring in and co-producing the film, issued an emotional statement following the incident and said there were ‘no words to convey [his] shock and sadness’ at Halyna’s death.

He confirmed he was ‘fully cooperating with the police investigation to address how this tragedy occurred’.

Alec was spotted outside the Santa Fe police station in tears after willingly providing a statement to assist with the investigation.

Court documents say the actor was handed the gun by an assistant director, after being assured it was safe and a ‘cold gun’, meaning it was unloaded.

A source told People that Alec will be taking a step back and cancelling his other projects, with the 63-year-old said to be ‘inconsolable’ after the shooting.

A rep for Rust Movies Productions LLC confirmed in a statement that they have halted production on the film ‘for an undetermined period of time’.

They added that they are ‘fully cooperating with the Santa Fe Police Department’s investigation’.

Hutchins, a mother of one, was born in the Ukraine and moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in filmmaking.

She was chosen as a Rising Star by the American Cinematographer magazine in 2019, and went on to work on multiple high-profile films including horrors The Mad Hatter and Darlin’ and police drama Blindfire.

In her final Instagram post, Hutchins spoke about how much she was enjoying working on the western, sharing a video of her and other crew members on horseback in the desert.
