Matthew Wright has hit out at Steve Allen’s critics following the Tilly Ramsay fat-shaming backlash, insisting that ‘there was too much hate in the world’.

Social media celebrity and Strictly Come Dancing star Tilly, 19, was targeted by LBC Radio presenter Steve, who remarked on air-that he was ‘bored’ of her performances and called her a ‘chubby little thing’.

Appearing on This Morning on Monday, Matthew said that the people who were abusive to Steve in the wake of his comments were hypocritical – accusing them of being ‘ageist and sexist’.

‘It was very interesting to see the comments made online afterwards for Steve Allen,’ Matthew told hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield.

While Matthew insisted that he wasn’t trying to justify the comments made by presenter Steve, he added that some of his critics ‘were incredibly ageist and sexist so he says something that’s cruel and hurtful to somebody’.

He added: ‘Then thousands of people on Twitter say something that’s cruel and hurtful and sexist and ageist about him. There’s too much hate in the world regardless of hate or sex or gender.’

Matthew added: ‘I am not pointing this out by way of justification for Steve Allen because I don’t think there is any justification.’

Tilly, who is the daughter of TV chef Gordon Ramsay, responded to the radio presenter’s comments on Instagra, where she said she would usually not ‘read and listen to comments and negativity’ but being ‘called out on a national radio station by a 67-year-old man is a step too far’.

Tilly was flooded with support following the ‘nasty’ comments, including from her fellow Strictly stars including Janette Manrara, John Whaite, Giovanni Pernice and Nikita Kuzmin.

In her response to Steve’s comments, which was widely praised, Tilly told Steve to ‘feel free to voice your opinions however I draw the line at commenting on my appearance’.

‘It’s such a shame that someone is trying to make such a positive experience negative. This isn’t the first and definitely won’t be the last comment made about my appearance and I accept that and I’m learning to accept myself.

‘But please remember that words can hurt and at the end of the day I am only 19,’ she added.

Strictly Come Dancing continues at 7.15pm on BBC One. This Morning airs on weekdays at 10am on ITV.
