Emmerdale’s Samantha Giles was forced to re-live the nightmare that was Bernice Blackstock wig which became one of the soap’s biggest talking points during the height of the pandemic.

The actress returned to the Dales earlier this year but her comeback was overshadowed by criticism over the hair piece which became an essential as the stars of the soap were forced to do their own hair and make-up in the pandemic.

With Bernice being a hairdresser and ultimately one of the most groomed residents of the Yorkshire village, it was essential she always looked the part.

Appearing on today’s Lorraine, speaking to host Christine Lampard – who was filling in for Lorraine Kelly – Samantha said: ‘It’s weird, I’m like a boomerang, aren’t I? Keep thinking I’ve gone and then I pop back.

‘It’s been lovely to be back, it’s been very strange with all the Covid rules and of course thank goodness hair and make-up is back!’

She continued: ‘Bernice is a hairdresser, she’s got to look quaffed and so on so we went for the wig and that had its own set of disasters, didn’t it?

‘When I saw some of the photos I thought, “oh no!!”’

Samantha previously explained the reasoning behind the wig, telling Metro.co.uk that she’s got ‘thick, wiry frizzy hair,’ and cannot do it herself.

‘I just can’t do it!,’ she told us. ‘Obviously Bernice is a hairdresser, so she is not going to be seen looking anything less than having her coiffed look, if you like!’

Emmerdale continues tonight at 7pm on ITV.
