According to a discovery by an ESET researcher, an app that’s supposedly for Squid Game wallpapers was installing ‘Joker’ malware on Android devices.

The app was avaliable on the Google Play Store along with hundreds of other apps about the Netflix series.

Researcher Lukas Stefanko flagged the issue to Google after he caught the app installing malware.

Joker malware is well known and can allow hackers to sign you up for expensive services that they can profit from.

Anyone downloading the “Squid Game Wallpaper 4K HD” app was said to be falling victim to a costly SMS scam.

Hackers were also said to be using the app as a way to take control of devices.

Google has since deleted the app from the Play Store.

However, you should check your device if you think you downloaded it before the deletion took place.

Researchers think the app was downloaded at least 5,000 times before Google removed it.

You should always be cautious about what apps you’re downloading and what permissions you are giving to an app.

Researchers have warned to watch out for Squid Game apps in particular as they think criminals will continue to try and take advantage of the popular franchise.
