PGA Tour Event in Bermuda Boosted With a Significant Increase in Prize Money

The PGA tour travels all the way from Japan to the small island territory of Bermuda for the next leg of the tour. The Butterfield Bermuda Championship gets underway from October 28 at the Port Royal Golf Course.

132 golfers field will compete for a $6,500,000 prize money at the 6828-yard par-71 course. However, the line-up at the event is far from impressive. Especially when you take into consideration the increase in the prize money from last year.

PGA Tour Bermuda Championship: Who all are playing?

They introduced the event in 2019 as an alternative event to the WGC-HSBC Champions. However, as a result of the cancellation of the event in 2019 and 2020, it was elevated to a permanent event. It offers full FedEx Cup points and the winner even gets a place on the Masters Tournament.

The first edition in 2018 had a limited purse of $3 million. Moreover, the 2020 edition of the tournament had a purse of $4 million. In comparison, the purse for the latest edition is a $6.5 million, a staggering 62.5% increase.

However, the field doesn’t feature anyone in the top 20 Official World Golf Ranking. The highest ranked golfer is Patrick Reed at the 24th spot. The other golfers include Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Matthew Fitzpatrick, Danny Willett, Mito Pereira among others. Brian Gay, defending champion from 2020, will also be teeing it up.

Will Gray, former golf writer for the GolfChannel wrote on twitter, “Bermuda purse up YOY from $4M to $6.5M, so players still making some solid coin this week despite the weak/shrinking field.” He also gave the increase in the prize money for each golfer, with the winner bagging $1.17 million.

Meanwhile, terminal cancer patient Brian Morris is also going to be teeing it up on Thursday. The 53-year-old professional golfer was extended an invitation for his debut appearance on the PGA tour.

Despite the low-ranked field, it will be an interesting week. It is impossible to guess who all will make it into the top ten. However, who all do you think we must keep a watch on?
