Netflix’s viral hit Squid Game has become a worldwide phenomenon, and with Halloween being a couple of days away, many are likely to take costume inspiration from the show.
However, this won’t be the case in one New York school district, as the principals from Mott Road, Enders Road, and Fayetteville Elementary, sent a written letter to parents saying costumes from the Korean drama are banned.
The series is rated 15 on the streaming platform, and there is a fear that some impressionable students may try to mimic the violent scenes in real life.
The signature outfits from the show, in particular the pink jumpsuit and mask worn by the Squid Game guards, and the green jumpsuits worn by contestants, are expected to feature prominently in Halloween celebrations around the world this year.
In the letter sent to parents, a principal reportedly said: ‘A Halloween costume from this show does not meet our school costume guidelines due to the potential violent message aligned with the costume.’
Knowing full well people will be rocking the show’s signature style this Halloween, Netflix US uploaded a number of looks on Instagram, from popular shows like Squid Game, Sex Education and You.

The survival drama has taken the world by storm, however some hardcore fans are taking the games a little too seriously.
Recently, a couple of Indonesian customers visiting Jakarta’s Lotte Shopping Avenue, had the shock of a lifetime when employees dressed head to toe in Squid Game gear, approached them with a toy gun.

Squid Game has officially become Netflix’s biggest debut ever, with over 111 million viewers tuning in to watch the show in the 28 days since it was released.
This means that the drama has beaten the viewership of Bridgerton, which was released at the end of 2020 and commanded 82m views.
Squid Game is available to stream on Netflix.
