The Simpsons creators honoured Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a special episode that featured a breast cancer survivor, and fans were in love.

Sunday’s episode of the animated sitcom, introduced Dr Wendy Sage, a hypnotherapist who had a unilateral mastectomy. As a result, the character has only one breast with a visible scar on her chest.

Fans were instantly full of praise for Wendy, whose character was voiced by Renee Ridgeley.

Renee is an actress, writer, and breast cancer survivor, who is also married to The Simpsons’ showrunner Matt Selman.

In an interview with Yahoo Life, Renee said: ‘Sage shows up as exactly who she is now, by living openly as a one-breasted woman, she sends a message of acceptance and wholeness celebrated by individuals in marginalized groups.’

Viewers took to Twitter and expressed their gratitude to the show for acknowledging the annual health campaign.

The Simpsons was RIGHT to show the port scar on a character who survived Breast Cancer. It’s the mark of a survivor. #Simpsons #BreastCancerAwareness pic.twitter.com/6AzejQPuW5

One user said: ‘I basically only watch new Simpsons out of muscle memory but the one tonight, which is about how casual body-talk by mothers can give daughters a complex, is one of the best I’ve seen in years.’

While another agreed with: ‘Many thanks to The Simpsons. This is Breast Cancer Awareness Month done well.’

The episode, titled Lisa’s Belly, focused on body positivity after Marge describes Lisa as looking ‘chunky.’

An insecure Lisa later develops a complex, leading them both to seek hypnotherapy.

The new character, Sage, opted to forgo surgical reconstruction after her unilateral mastectomy, and has one breast, which survivors refer to as ‘uniboob.’
