Alec Baldwin has spoken on camera to reporters for the first time since the fatal shooting of Halyna Hutchins on the set of Rust.

The actor, 63, stopped to answer questions from reporters who had been following his car in a video obtained by TMZ, but told them he was unable to go into details as it was an ongoing investigation.

Huchins, 42, had been killed on the set of Rust when a prop gun Baldwin had been holding misfired, fatally shooting her and injuring director Joel Souza, 48.

Baldwin told reporters: ‘I’m not allowed to make any comments because it’s an ongoing investigation, I’ve been ordered by the sheriff’s department in Santa Fe, I can’t answer any questions about the investigation.

‘It’s an active investigation in terms of a woman dying. She was my friend. She was my friend. The day I arrived to Santa Fe to start shooting I took her to dinner with Joel the director.

‘We were a very, very well-oiled crew shooting a film together and then this horrible event happened.’

Baldwin revealed that he had been in contact with Hutchins’ family after the tragic incident, adding: ‘I met with her husband Matthew and her son.

‘They guy is overwhelmed with grief. It’s something that… there are incidental accidents on film sets from time to time, but nothing like this. This is a one in a trillion event and so he is in shock, he has a nine-year-old son.

‘We are in constant contact with him and we’re very worried about his family and his kid. As I said, we’re eagerly awaiting for the sheriff’s department to tell us what their investigation has yielded.’

Baldwin also added that he would be interested in the limitation of guns on film sets, but added that something like this is a very rare occurrence on a film set.

He told reporters he does not think production will resume on Rust following the tragedy, and he is speaking to the police ‘every day’ to find out what is happening with the investigation.

It is the first time Alec has addressed the incident on camera, having previously tweeted: ‘There are no words to convey my shock and sadness regarding the tragic accident that took the life of Halyna Hutchins, a wife, mother and deeply admired colleague of ours. I’m fully cooperating with the police investigation to address how this tragedy occurred.

‘I am in touch with her husband, offering my support to him and his family. My heart is broken for her husband, their son, and all who knew and loved Halyna.’
