How Did Caleb Plant Get the Nasty Cut Under His Eye?

Canelo Alvarez vs Caleb Plant will be a historic boxing fight as it will crown the world’s first ‘undisputed’ super-middleweight champion. This fight deserves all the hype as we saw Canelo break his character and respond to his opponent. A scuffle on stage during the press conference led to Plant getting cut under his eye.

The buildup to the altercation

Earlier that day, Caleb ‘Sweethands’ Plant and Alvarez came face to face to shoot a TV commercial. During the shoot, the pair had to face off in front of the cameras with nobody there. Canelo claims that Plant came with an angry attitude during the shoot which carried to the press conference.

In an interview with BT Sport, Canelo said, “When we started the day in the morning, we made a commercial and we had a little face-off for the TV before with nobody there. He came with a bad attitude to the filming and commercial and like angry, but it is okay I didn’t worry about it.”

In Showtime’s All Access episode one, Canelo addressed the situation. “I respect his skills. He have a lot of skills in boxing, but the way he say bad things, that’s not my way to promote fights. But he come with that, okay, you got what you want.”

The animosity led up to the press conference. Plant berated Canelo and his trainer, Eddie Reynoso, for the entire duration of the press conference.

He repeatedly called both Canelo and Reynoso for ‘cheating’ and using banned substances. Plant claimed that this comes from fear and insecurity. Canelo, in his illustrious career, has faced all kinds of opponents, but he always showed great class and professionalism no matter what his opponent threw at him before the fight.

Canelo Alvarez and Caleb Plant get into a scuffle

During the press conference and the buildup to any fight, faceoffs are considered a mandatory ritual in boxing. It gives the fighters a chance to size up their opponent, talk trash to them, and try to get into their head. It also gives the press great photos before the fight.

After all the trash talk and the buildup, when Canelo came face to face with Plant, the pair began talking to each other. Canelo kept repeating, “You’re gonna feel something different. You’re gonna see it, I promise you.” Plant kept countering back. After a few exchanges, Plant said something that Canelo did not like one bit.

“You’re gonna see motherf**ker.”

Just as quickly as Plant uttered these words, Canelo pushed his American foe about a foot back. Canelo got heated up as he started swearing back at his opponent. Plant then slowly walked up to Canelo and stared him in the eye. ‘Sweethands’ tried to throw his left hand at Canelo with an open palm, almost trying to slap him.

Canelo’s work on the reflex ball paid off as he slipped the punch and countered with a quick one-two. Unlike Plant’s punch, Canelo’s one-two landed clean. The first punch, a short left jab, hit Plant right under the eye, sending his glasses flying off his face. The second landed smack dab on his cheek as Canelo pushed him away.

The result of this altercation was a swollen and cut-up cheekbone for Plant.
