Where is the chateau from Channel 4’s Escape to the Chateau?

The chateau has slowly been restored to its former glory

Everybody needs a bit of escapism, and it doesn’t better get than Escape to the Chateau.

The Channel 4 series whisks viewers away to a glorious French chateau, where Dick Strawbridge, a former Lieutenant Colonel in the British Army, and partner Angel Adoree, a businesswoman who owned the Vintage Patisserie, renovate the chateau and set up a special events company.

Viewers have been hooked since the show first aired in 2016, with the seasons following them as they continue to restore, renovate and celebrate personal milestones with their families.

Just where is the house from Escape to the Chateau based though?

Where is Escape to the Chateau filmed?

Dick Strawbridge and Angel Adoree bought the Chateau de la Motte-Husson, located in the town of Martigné-sur-Mayenne.

This small market town is based in the Mayenne department in the north-west of France.

The Chateau de la Motte-Husson is of Neo-Renaissance style.

How much was the chateau from Escape to the Chateau?

The Strawbridge’s paid £280,000 when they bought the ruined property back in 2015.

The husband and wife duo have invited viewers along with their journey for the last 5 years

The chateau has 45 bedrooms, 78 windows, 12 acres and one moat.

If less than £300,000 sounds like a bargain for such a building, the property had stood empty for 40 years before they bought it, and had no electricity, heating or running water.

They subsequently spent the last six years restoring it to its former glory, documenting their renovations and growing their special events business throughout the show’s eight seasons.

Unfortunately for anyone hoping to plan a stay or a wedding at the chateau, they are currently not open to bookings.

On the website, they explain: ‘In light of the current climate, we have made the tough decision to keep The Chateau closed for weddings and events at the moment. We feel it is our duty and responsibility to play our part in keeping everyone safe.’

For now, you’ll just have to tune into the new series of the show.

Escape to the Chateau airs Sundays at 8pm on Channel 4.
