Doctor Who series 13: Fans hit out at ‘terrible’ special effects as Jodie Whittaker returns for final outing

Sunday marked the long-awaited return of Doctor Who, and while many were ecstatic for its return, some fans said the special effects were a let down.
Episode one, titled The Halloween Apocalypse, marked the start of Jodie Whittaker’s final outing as the Time Lord, and introduced viewers to new character Daniel Lewis played by comedian John Bishop.
Minutes into the first chapter of series 13 and Jodie was seen with her loyal companion Yaz (Mandip Gill) handcuffed upside down from a gravity board, while an acid sea swirled around them.
As soon as the pair defeated the villain that was holding them captive, they began to swirl through the air while still being handcuffed to the board, with an eerie green light being displayed in the background.
While some viewers were full of praise for the opening sequence, some took to Twitter to express their frustration with the quality of the CGI, branding the scene ‘terrible’.
‘No one gonna talk about how bad the CGI background was for the starting planet lmao,’ wrote one.

Another chimed in agreement and said: ‘I don’t understand how the Doctor Who CGI looked better 10 years ago.’
Series 13 of the hit show will also be Chris Chibnall’s last as showrunner before Russell T Davies takes over the role once again.
Speaking to Metro.co.uk and other gathered press, Jodie discussed her emotions by saying: ‘You have to honour the show and to honour everything. Me and Chris, there was this thing of like, “We want to do three seasons”.

‘But no-one holds you to that so there was always a conversation, it was always fluid. But when you commit to that decision.’

She added: ‘This Doctor is Chris’s Doctor so for me it is right, but if everyone comes up to you forever going, “I’m a Doctor Who fan” then that is an absolute joy because it has been such a pleasure.
No clues have been given over who will act as Jodie’s replacement. Michaela Coel, Richard Ayoade and Olly Alexander are the many names rumoured to be playing the 14th Doctor.
Doctor Who returns next Sunday at 6.15pm on BBC One.
