Issa Rae’s hairstylist Felicia Leatherwood has been the mastermind behind the actresses’ signature style on the hit show Insecure and revealed the inspiration behind some of the most iconic looks.

Fans of the show will know that Issa Dee is a hot mess who is uncertain of both her career and love life, but she always understands the assignment when it comes to her hair.

Felicia, one of the world’s leading celebrity stylists, was personally asked by Issa to help create her look on the hit comedy drama.

HBO confirmed the show’s latest series will be the last, and she opened up to Metro.co.uk about how grateful she is to have been given the ‘freedom’ for her vision over the last five years.

She said: ‘They gave me a lot of freedom, I’m grateful to Issa, Prentice, and Melina and everyone for letting me create as her character Issa Dee grew – and because of that, I was able to create hairstyles that grew with her.

‘Issa will probably tell you, she’s such a great client because she allows us to create. I’ve been her hairstylist for the past eight, almost nine years, and to be honest, I try to keep all of her looks separate.’

Felicia also explained that she was impressed with how much input Issa put in behind the scenes.

‘When she’s on the show, you see the insecurity, you see her growing as a woman,’ she said.

‘As her money changes, her look will change. Her clothes, hair, and makeup all turn up a bit. It’s a great challenge.’

It is a sad time for Insecure fans as the fifth and final season premiered on October 24, with episodes being released weekly.

The semi-autobiographical tale, initially based on the series Awkward Black Girl, followed Issa and pal Molly (Yvonne Orji) as they navigated life and love as Black women in Los Angeles.

The tale has earned the cast and crew a string of awards, as well as high praise for the frank discussion on the Black experience.

Insecure season 5 is now streaming on Sky Comedy with new episodes releasing weekly on Tuesday’s at 9pm.
