Newcastle hoping to name new boss NEXT WEEK with Chelsea legend John Terry in running after £300m Saudi takeover

NEWCASTLE are keen to get a new manager in place in time for the international break next week – with John Terry joining the shortlist.

The Toon’s new owners sacked former boss Steve Bruce last month after the club found themselves in the bottom three and winless after eight league games.

And although Newcastle’s new owners have ambitions of competing for trophies in the coming years, their immediate objective is to keep the club in the Premier League.

The Magpies have lost two and drawn one since their £300m takeover last month and the new owners are keen to get someone in to turn their fortunes around quickly.

Graeme Jones has taken interim charge of the club since Bruce’s departure, but a host of high-profile names have been linked with the job permanently.

The latest name to join that list is Chelsea legend John Terry, who spent three years at Aston Villa as Dean Smith’s assistant manager until recently.

Terry left Villa Park in July this year to pursue his own career in management but has not yet taken a job, despite being linked with a number of clubs.

The hierarchy at Newcastle are said to be keen to appoint a manager who has experience in the Premier League, giving the former England international a huge advantage over his competitors.

Terry made 492 appearances over 19 seasons in the Prem, winning the league on five occasions with Chelsea.

His success in the England top flight came alongside former teammate Frank Lampard, who is also thought to be in consideration.

Ex-Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe has also expressed an interest in the job, but several other candidates thought to be ahead of him in the race.

Interviews with the possible candidates are set to be completed this week before the board makes their official recommendation to chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan.

The list is reported to also include Belgium boss Roberto Martinez, as well as the former Dortmund manager Lucien Favre and Paulo Fonseca, who was last at Roma.

Ajax boss Erik Ten Hag was initially reported to be in the running, but it has since emerged that he is not interested as he does not want to be competing in a relegation scrap.

The Dutch manager could also be waiting to see how events unfold at Old Trafford, having been linked with the Manchester United job should Ole Gunnar Solskjaer get the sack.

Jones is expected to take charge of the club for the last time this weekend as Newcastle travel to the south coast on Saturday to take on Brighton at the Amex Stadium.

And if Norwich are able to snatch a win away at newly promoted Brentford, a Newcastle defeat would see their new manager taking over the club right at the bottom of the table.
