Rio Ferdinand spent Halloween in a wheelchair after rushing to A&E last week.

The football legend revealed last Sunday that he had ended up in hospital – joking that Manchester United’s painful 5-0 defeat to Liverpool had put him there – although did not disclose what was wrong.

While Rio hasn’t divulged any of the details, he headed out for Halloween confined to a wheelchair.

In a picture shared to Instagram, the former Man United ace was unrecognisable beneath impressive skull make-up as he gripped a scythe for his creepy Grim Reaper costume.

Beside him was wife Kate Ferdinand, who had glammed up to emulate the iconic Disney villain Cruella De Vil.

Rio captioned the post: ‘Happy Halloween 🎃 Been in hospital all week, promised the kids I’d dress up….even if it was for an hour & in a wheel chair 👀😂👻.’

Former footballer Ashley Williams was among those commenting, writing: ‘A dad’s gotta do what a dad’s gotta do.’

Rio also shared a picture of the family, ‘minus one son’, with baby Cree sitting on his lap in a Dalmatian costume.

Rio’s 11-year-old daughter Tia, who he shared with late wife Rebecca Ellison, was also dressed as a Dalmatian, while one of his sons, believed to be 12-year-old Tate, wore a robe and a crucifix.

Both children hid their faces.

Over on her own page, former Towie star Kate shared a further look at their costumes, and wrote: ‘I don’t play when it comes to my fur-babies.’

The 30-year-old wore a spotted fur jacket over a slinky black dress, teamed with red boots, a spotted wig and dramatic face paint.

While Rio spent an hour out with the family before getting some rest, Kate stayed out on the town, and shared snaps from a raucous after-party she attended.

The couple got married in September 2019, with Kate becoming stepmum to Tia, Tate and 14-year-old Lorenz.

Their first child together, Cree, was born in December last year.
