The assistant director who handed Alec Baldwin the gun that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of Rust has shared his first statement since the incident took place.

Last month, Baldwin, 63, discharged a gun on the set of the film Rust, accidentally killing the 42-year-old cinematographer and injuring director Joel Souza, 48.

David Halls was AD on the Western movie filming in Santa Fe, New Mexico and he called for movie industry to ‘reevaluate its values’ after the fatal accident.

He told New York Post: ‘Halyna Hutchins was not just one of the most talented people I’ve worked with, but also a friend. I’m shocked and saddened by her death.

‘It’s my hope that this tragedy prompts the industry to reevaluate its values and practices to ensure no one is harmed through the creative process again.’

However, Halls did not address details of the incident – or respond to previous reports that he was the one who handed the ‘hot gun’ to the 30 Rock actor on October 21.

He added that he’s been ‘overwhelmed by the love and support’ and stated, ‘my thoughts are with all who knew and loved Halyna.’

His statement came days after investigators confirmed Baldwin was the last one to hold the gun that killed Hutchins.

The Boss Baby star was handed the prop gun by Halls, who took the revolver from a tray set up by armourer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed.

It was said the gun was first taken out of a safe in a truck by prop master Sarah Zachry.

Santa Fe sheriff Adan Mendoza and Santa Fe district attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies shared a public update on the ongoing investigation in a press conference last week.

Mendoza confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and charges may be filed at a later date, if probable cause is found.
