Bake Off’s caramel week is the most stressful yet but ends in disaster for George who is eliminated

The Great British Bake Off’s caramel week was a tough ask for all the contestants, but ended in disaster for George Aristidou who was eliminated.

He had struggled with the technical aspects of caramel week, beginning with a caramel tart which curdled and didn’t cool in enough time to pipe cream on top.

Even star baker Jurgen Krauss struggled with the first challenge as his tart split, with most of the bakers feeling the pressure to work with the volatile ingredient.

Things did not get much better in the technical challenge where the bakers were given an hour and half to recreate a Twix – called a ‘caramel biscuit bar’ as the presenters were not allowed to use the brand name on air.

As well as the technical elements, the bakers were also asked to create 10 identical bars, so presentation was everything.

Judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood almost lost a couple of teeth tasting George’s bake as his caramel turned out too hard, and not even a turn in the microwave could fix it.

George fought back so well, but despite Noel unpacking his bags it wasn’t quite enough to save him. It’s been an absolute pleasure having you in the Bake Off Tent, George! #GBBO pic.twitter.com/wesJVtwu7m

George did redeem himself in the final showstopper challenge in which the bakers were tasked with making a sugar dome within their creation.

Crystelle struggled to remove her isomalt dome from the mould, meaning she had to remake it three times over, eventually managing to get one done with help from Lizzie.

Lizzie, meanwhile, was finally praised for achieving ‘finesse’ in the look of her cake, which inverted the sugar dome into a bowl of roses, but Prue complained that the ‘brave’ bake was a bit ‘stodgy’.

George was praised for his presentation but Paul complained that the cake was overall too dry, but Prue complimented George for the flavour.

Unfortunately, his final bake was not enough to save him and get him through to week eight as George ended up eliminated from the show.

The Great British Bake Off airs Tuesdays from 8pm on Channel 4.
