Boxing Legend Tommy Thomas Dies – A Look at His Stellar Career

The sport of boxing lost one of its greatest retro boxing icons in Tommy Thomas. In his prime boxing days, Thomas was regarded as one elite heavyweight who allured many fans with his sublime punching power. He had a short yet sublime career and managed to become the sixth-ranked heavyweight fighter.

Thomas was 67, and he had battled Parkinson’s and dementia for the past decade. He took his last breath on Sunday.

Thomas was captivated by ‘Sweet Science’ from a young age. That said, he became a professional boxer in 1977. Back then, boxing had a substantial fan base and the heavyweight division was slowly becoming everyone’s favorite.

Thomas, 6’1″, already had some good physical features to take the heavyweight division by storm. He did just that in his first few fights. The Clarksburg native won 9 fights in a row and showed his power punching abilities.

However, after these many wins, he suffered a loss. Subsequently, he made a swift comeback. Thomas’ stint was full of trials, but he never gave up and kept demolishing his opponents.

The lanky fighter contested for a title twice in his career. His title bouts were for the NABF heavyweight title and USA West Virginia State Heavyweight title. For the NABF title fight, he faced Michael Dokes and lost the fight via KO. However, in his second title fight, Thomas defeated Wesley Smith via a UD in 1984.

In 1986, he hung up his gloves from the sport with an exuberant 34-8 track record.

What did Tommy Thomas do after retirement?

Post his retirement, Tommy Thomas became a Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) officer for Clarksburg Police. In this role, he went to numerous schools to educate children about the danger of drugs and more.

In everything Thomas did, he put in all of his hard work and dedication. That said, the old boxing fans rightly recognize him as the great of the sport.

Tommy Thomas will be remembered for a long time because of the character he displayed in and outside the ring.
