Cesaro wishes WWE bosses had kept up momentum after WrestleMania run as he compares ‘heartbreak’ to local football team

WWE star Cesaro was on the run of his career earlier this year as he beat Seth Rollins at WrestleMania and took Roman Reigns to the limit just weeks later,

Almost six months after his Universal Championship Match, the Swiss Superman hasn’t been able to stay in the main event despite a fantastic run, but he’s staying positive and hoping to reignite that spark and rise back up the card.

Speaking exclusively to Metro.co.uk, he shrugged: ‘I feel like that’s been a big part of my career, right? Every time you think, “This is it”, it isn’t… there’s still some work to be done, let’s put it that way!

‘It’s kinda like rooting for your local football club, right, where you’re just like, “This is our year! This is our year!” Then it’s off to a great start and then your heart gets broken again, and you still root for them though because they’re your team.

‘So, everybody out there that’s been rooting for me, I appreciate it – I know how it feels. Trust me, I feel it first!’

The Rollins feud appeared to be a star-making moment for Cesaro, who was able to show off his charisma in a way he hadn’t been able to do before.

‘That was so much fun because I got to do more promos, I got to have fun. To me, that’s something that I’m like… if you talk to me now, I can clearly talk, I can clearly have fun,’ he smiled.

‘To me, it’s like, I want to do more of that! After that feud with Seth, I was hoping that I’d get to do more of that. That’s what I kept saying, “I need to do more of that!” The more reps, the more you do it, the more comfortable you get, the more people get used to the way you speak.’

He thrived in that environment, getting to ‘learn’ and improve even after such a storied and lengthy career thus far.

However, after his Universal Title match with Roman, he wishes he’d been able to retain the momentum and keep pushing to become a more consistent face in WWE’s main event picture.

‘I had a very good start to the year and then I kinda… I hit a road block, so to speak,’ he admitted. ‘But then the match gets announced with me and WALTER and people just get so excited about it, and that’s just based on the reputation that we both have.

‘To me, that just proves… “Hey guys, just imagine how that reaction would have been if we had continued how we started the year.” ‘

The WALTER match in question will take place on select dates on WWE’s upcoming UK tour, and it’s another chance for the former United States Champion to prove he’s one of the best in the world between the ropes.

Cesaro admitted these untelevised matches ‘definitely help’ when it comes to keeping him motivating even when things aren’t necessarily going well.

‘It’s a new challenge, it’s something that’s fun, and also the support from the fans and the excitement, you see that. It also helps because you’re like, “Oh OK” – I do know that people care, but it’s always nice to hear,’ he smiled.

‘No matter what job you do, you can start doubting yourself. If stuff all of a sudden doesn’t go your way anymore, and there’s no explanation and it’s nothing that you can control, that can mess with your head sometimes. But then to see the outpour of people that are excited about something, that is always very nice to see.’

So, when it comes to those moments when everything isn’t going as smoothly as he’d hope, is Cesaro the kind of person to go straight to the boss to find out what the deal is?

‘I try to find a happy medium, because I feel like if you just constantly badger people that’s not the right way to go. But if you show them and let the work speak for itself, and then follow it up, I feel that’s the way to go,’ he explained.

‘But there’s sometimes stuff I cannot explain, and it doesn’t get explained to me either. It’s like, “Oh, everything’s great”, and you’re like… [raises eyebrows] “OK.” ‘

One thing guaranteed to be great is his matches with WALTER on tour, and he things giving fans in England this first-time bout is a fitting nod to the European wrestling scene.

‘I feel sometimes Europe gets short-changed when it comes to cool matches, or for pay-per-views and stuff like that. For England to get this match first is pretty awesome, and on a live event too,’ he said.

‘Because that means we get some more time and some more freedom. It’s gonna be good – there’s not the time restrictions of TV, so it’s gonna be… I’m looking forward to it a lot.’
