Every major PS5 release for 2021 & beyond – from God Of War to Final Fantasy 16

Ragnarök may be coming, but the era of the PS5 has only begun (pic: Sony)

Between first party exclusives and third party offerings, PS5 owners won’t need to worry about running out of new games to play.

It’s been almost a year since the PlayStation 5 released and while it’s still not the easiest thing to get hold of at the moment, those fortunate to own one have got to experience some brilliant exclusives.

PlayStation 4 owners haven’t been left in the dust either and there are plenty of games coming to both consoles, so those stuck on the older hardware don’t have to worry about missing out.

However, from next year the number of PlayStation 5-only games will start to increase, so here’s a rundown of all the important PlayStation releases fans will want to keep their eyes on.

PS4 & PS5 exclusives

Horizon Forbidden West

The first major exclusive of 2022, Horizon Forbidden West is also set to be one of the best-looking console games ever. It will also be the last PlayStation 4 game to offer a free PlayStation 5 upgrade, so you’ll have to pay for them afterwards. It releases for PlayStation 4 and 5 on February 18.

Gran Turismo 7

It’s certainly taken a while but Gran Turismo 7 finally has a scheduled release date – although long-term fans will know not to trust that. Like Horizon Forbidden West and God Of War this one will be released for both PlayStation 4 and 5.

Forspoken

A console exclusive from Square Enix, action role-playing game Forspoken was originally known as Project Athia and sees New York City girl Frey warped to a fantasy world. It releases for PlayStation 5 and PC in spring 2022.

Ghostwire: Tokyo

Bethesda may be under Microsoft’s ownership now, but Ghostwire: Tokyo was planned to be a timed PlayStation 5 exclusive before the buyout, just like Deathloop. Developed by Evil Within studio Tango Gameworks, it currently only has a 2022 release window.

God Of War: Ragnarök

Arguably the most anticipated PlayStation exclusive on this list, God Of War: Ragnarök continues the story of Kratos and Atreus as they embark on a new quest. Like Ghostwire, it lacks an exact release date and is only listed as coming in 2022, but it will be available for PlayStation 4 and 5.

Uncharted: Legacy Of Thieves Collection

In lieu of a brand new Uncharted game, fans can look forward to reliving Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy on PlayStation 5 and PC. There’s no release date yet, but Sony says it will be out in early 2022, so perhaps expect it in April by the absolute latest.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

We all knew it was coming, but Insomniac has officially announced its Spider-Man sequel. Unlike the Miles Morales game, this will purely be a PlayStation 5 exclusive and will see Peter and Miles team up to fight Venom. It’s scheduled for 2023.

Marvel’s Wolverine

What wasn’t as predictable was the news that Insomniac is also making a Wolverine game for the PlayStation 5. Details are incredibly scarce beyond the brief announcement teaser, although the creative director has promised a mature experience that won’t be as short as the Miles Morales game. There’s no release date but since it’s in early development, don’t expect it to be out until after Spider-Man 2.

Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic Remake

Much like Wolverine, this remake of the action role-playing classic only has a teaser trailer, but that was enough to get fans of the original excited. Aspyr, which has ported multiple Star Wars games to modern consoles (including the original Knights Of The Old Republic – coming soon to Nintendo Switch), is handling development duties. There’s no release date yet but it will be a timed PlayStation 5 console exclusive. A PC release has been confirmed as well.

Final Fantasy 16

Square Enix has been rather tight-lipped on Final Fantasy 16 ever since it was announced last year. With not even a release date to go on, all we know is that it will be a PlayStation 5 exclusive, it’s going for a more traditional fantasy aesthetic compared to Final Fantasy 15, and Naoki Yoshida, the man responsible for Final Fantasy 14, is in the producer’s chair.

Babylon’s Fall

An exclusive from Bayonetta creators PlatinumGames and published by Square Enix, Babylon’s Fall is very different from the rest of Platinum’s catalogue. A co-op action live service game, it still lacks a release date three years after it was announced and will release for PlayStation 4 and 5, plus PC.

The Last Of Us Part 2 multiplayer

Ever since Naughty Dog decided to cut out The Last Of Us Part 2’s multiplayer mode from the original release, it’s been known that it will launch as a separate game. That was two years ago though and since then there have been zero updates on the project (at least officially). Naughty Dog has recently been on a hiring spree specifically for a multiplayer game but who knows when it will actually share anything tangible about the project.

Firewalk Studios exclusive

Back in April, Sony announced a new, original multiplayer game from Firewalk Studios was in development exclusively for PlayStation 5. Nothing else is really known about it, but Firewalk Studios, while a new studio, has some pedigree as it includes former Bungie staff who helped create Destiny.

Third party PS4 & PS5 games

Call Of Duty: Vanguard

This one’s literally right around the corner. This year’s Call Of Duty game comes from Sledgehammer Games and is returning to the Second World War. It will be out on November 5.

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition

It’d be easier to list the platforms the Grand Theft Auto Trilogy isn’t releasing for. Containing revamped versions of Grand Theft Auto 3, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, it releases on all formats on November 11.

Battlefield 2042

If Call Of Duty isn’t your thing, EA and DICE’s own military multiplayer shooter is getting a new entry in November. Technically, Battlefield 2042 is out on November 19, but anyone who pre-orders the Gold or Ultimate edition can start playing a week earlier on November 12.

Final Fantasy 14: Endwalker

This may just be an expansion, but Endwalker has some major significance for Final Fantasy 14 fans, as it marks the end of a storyline that’s been running since the game was rebooted in 2013 – it’ll launch on November 23.

Destiny 2: The Witch Queen

Another important expansion, Destiny 2: The Witch Queen will mark the beginning of the game’s fifth year of content, with the titular Witch Queen to play a vital role in the following seasons. It releases on February 22, 2022.

Elden Ring

The next major release from the director of Dark Souls, Elden Ring has been a long time coming. Although it will no longer release in January as planned, the delay is only a month long and a beta version will be available to play later this month. It’s now due out on February 25.

Saints Row

The Saints Row series is getting a full-on reboot in 2022, with a new cast of characters and a return to street level crime after Saints Row 4 took the series into space. While slightly toned down, the game still looks like it will retain some of the series’ wackier elements. It’s out on February 25.

Stranger Of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin

Since Final Fantasy 16 is nowhere to be seen for the time being, fans of the series can pass the time with this Dark Souls influenced spin-off/sequel/prequel/who-even-knows-at-this-point to the very first Final Fantasy game. It’s out on March 18.

Avatar: Frontiers Of Pandora

One of Ubisoft’s collaborations with Disney, Avatar: Frontiers Of Pandora is a tie-in to James Cameron’s Avatar movie (which is still supposed to be getting a sequel next year) for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Stadia, and Amazon Luna. Developer Massive Entertainment is also working on an open world Star Wars game, but very little is known about it at the moment.

Gotham Knights

Warner Bros. has three major game releases scheduled for consoles and PC over the next couple of years. The first is Gotham Knights, developed by Batman: Arkham Origins studio Warner Bros. Montréal, and sees Batman’s sidekicks take centre stage. It’s meant to be out next year.

Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League

Second is Rocksteady’s Suicide Squad game. Set in the same universe as the Batman: Arkham games, it’s a co-op action game that pits the titular squad against supervillain Brainiac and a brainwashed Justice League. It releases in 2022 as well but will be a next gen console exclusive.

Hogwarts Legacy

Lastly, Hogwarts Legacy is the Harry Potter game fans have wanted for years, putting you in control of your customisable wizard or witch attending Hogwarts in the late 1800s. Like Gotham Knights, it’s scheduled for 2022.

Rumoured PlayStation games

Twisted Metal

Exactly who asked for a game reboot and a TV show? (pic: Sony)

No doubt Sony has multiple unannounced projects that it’s keeping close to its chest, but some of them already seem to have leaked through the cracks. For starters, a reboot of the Twisted Metal series is believed to be in development at Lucid, which made fellow vehicular combat game Destruction All-Stars. There’s also a TV show planned, for some reason.

Marvel multiplayer game

Another rumour points to Insomniac working on a third Marvel project, specifically some kind of multiplayer game. Insomniac has definitely been hiring for a multiplayer project but there’s no official confirmation on whether it’s related to Marvel.
