TRADE DEADLINE: Kansas City Chiefs Acquire Melvin Ingram from Steelers

If there was one transfer that was certain to happen this window, it was that of Melvin Ingram’s exit from the Pittsburgh Steelers. The main reason behind this was the recent murmurs about the increasing dissatisfaction of Melvin Ingram.

If reports are to be believed, the edge rusher was increasingly getting frustrated with coach Mike Tomlin’s philosophy. After a lot of rumors and murmurs, the official announcement is here. Melvin Ingram has officially been traded to the Kansas City Chiefs on deadline day.

Melvin Ingram had a stint to forget for the Steelers

From 2017 to 2019, Ingram appeared in three Pro Bowls after nine years as a first-round draught selection with the Los Angeles Chargers. LA then released Ingram after an injury-plagued 2020 season, and he remained a free agent into the summer. The Steelers around that time suffered an injury crisis and signed Ingram for depth.

During Ingram’s first three weeks of the season, the LB received a substantial quantity of snaps. Even after the starters returned, Ingram played over half of the Steeler’s defensive snaps against Green Bay and 60% against the Denver Broncos in Week 5. Overall, in the six games for the Steelers in 2020, Ingram totaled a dismal 10 tackles and six quarterback hits.

“From a team perspective it’s better to have volunteers instead of hostages.”

One of my personal favorite Tomlin-isms.

According to Rapoport, the Steelers will receive a sixth-round draft pick. The journalist later confirmed that it will be a 2022 sixth-round draft pick. Ingram’s transfer to Kansas City means that the Pittsburgh Steelers now have three outside linebackers on their 53- man roster. Their linebackers include T.J. Watt, Alex Highsmith, and Derrek Tuszka.

All said and done, Melvin is very talented and deserves a good run with a top team. Here’s wishing Melvin Ingram all the best for a new start at Kansas City Chiefs.
