The festive season is upon us, with Disney releasing a tear-jerking Christmas advert for 2021 that rivals some of the most emotional campaigns released by John Lewis in the past.

Over the years, John Lewis’ Christmas adverts have become known for tugging hard on the heartstrings, with heartfelt tales including The Long Wait and Monty the Penguin.

As such, other brands have been stepping up the mark to take the festive crown, with Disney’s latest animated short film telling the heartwarming story of a blended family and their beautiful bond set to a powerful song performed by Gregory Porter.

In 2020, TV viewers were introduced to Lola, whose granddaughter repairs the treasured Mickey Mouse toy that she was given by her father as a child.

In their new Christmas ad, Disney delves deeper into the granddaughter’s backstory, as her partner Mike moves into her family home with her two children Max and Ella.

While Mike appears nervous when he first arrives at Nicole’s front door with his dog, he immediately starts bonding with the children, inviting his family over to the house and enjoying winter activities as a household.

The children pore over a Disney book given to Max by their birth father, with classic Disney characters including Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Moana and Buzz Lightyear coming to life from the pages.

Everything appears to be going smoothly following Mike’s move – that is, until he’s unable to prevent the gingerbread house the children carefully created from smashing to pieces.

After the siblings run off crying, Mike appears downtrodden by the mishap, deciding in the dead of the night to make it again from scratch on his own.

The kids are overjoyed to see the newly built gingerbread house in all its glory when they enter the kitchen in the morning, snuggling with their stepdad as Nicole watches on.

While the touching message at the centre of the advert will undoubtedly result in tears being shed, the film is made even more powerful by the dulcet tones of Gregory, whose track Love Runs Deeper is available for download with 100% of the proceeds going to children’s charity Make-A-Wish International until December 31.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk, the jazz singer explained that the advert ‘celebrates real togetherness, encouraging real family love that has a real impact in society and I love that’.

‘All of these things have been in short supply in the separation that has been necessary to get past this pandemic,’ he added.

The Stepdad, Disney’s ‘From Our Family To Yours’ animated festive advert, can be watched on DisneyUK’s YouTube channel.
