Toto Wolff Hoping Mercedes Exploits the ‘Layer of Unknown’ to Beat Red Bull F1 in Mexico

Toto Wolff has had an intense yet exciting F1 season so far, playing a crucial role in Mercedes’ title fight against Red Bull. There were quite a lot of ups and downs throughout the journey, with both the teams sharing an equal level of dominance; the latest arriving from Mercedes.

After a brief dominant stint, the Brackley outfit are back to watching Red Bull hit the top of the time charts. But, will it be that straightforward in Mexico? Wolff doesn’t think so.

What did the Mercedes boss say?

Following the Max Verstappen victory at the US Grand Prix, the focus has now landed on Mexico City which awaits its first Formula 1 race since 2019. And considering Mercedes and Red Bull’s strengths and weaknesses, it looked like Red Bull might embrace yet another top show at Hermanos Rodriguez circuit.

However, Wolff has another perspective on this. Mercedes have been strong over circuits they were usually weak, and it’s the same case with Red Bull too. Hence, going by that logic, Wolff opined that there is a “layer of unknown” which his team is looking to exploit in Mexico.

Red Bull have gone well there in the past and it hasn’t been our strongest circuit,” the Mercedes team principal told Mercedes in a preview to the Mexican Grand Prix.

But this year has shown that anything is possible and circuits where you were previously weak, you are suddenly strong, and vice versa. So, it adds a layer of unknown in the build-up, which only increases the excitement.

Is a Lewis Hamilton victory possible in Mexico?

Very likely! It is almost impossible to downplay the chances of Hamilton winning the race this weekend, solely because of his racing experience. Yes, Red Bull, and more importantly, Verstappen, are fast.

But, even with such an aggressive stance to the season, neither of them have been able to shoo the 7-time world champion away from the title fight. Hence, the same might replicate over the Mexican GP as well. The high-altitude circuit might play to Red Bull’s strengths.

But, with a much reliable and fresher engine at the back, Hamilton almost zeroes Red Bull’s dominance over Mercedes. So, are we in for a nail-biting weekend at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez? Well, we’ll know in time.
