Although Paul managed to drop down to 19st after gastric surgery, his weight has slowly crept back up again in recent years.
Once branded The World’s Fattest Man, Paul now weighs in at 39st and has not left the house in two months.
Details of Paul’s battles with food were revealed on Wednesday night after he let cameras back into his home for a ‘catch up’ on the past 10 years.
But viewers watching the ITV1 documentary could not get their heads around how much food Paul used to be able to pile away.
In flashback footage, a voiceover said: “He was bingeing on 40 chocolate bars and 100 packets of crisps a day. And the rot soon set in.”
Paul went on to reveal that his teeth fell out as a result of his extremely poor diet, so he would perform his “own dentistry” at home.
It was also revealed that he would order various takeaway meals every single night.
Paul explained: “When I look at photos of me at 80st, that was another me.
“Your dignity and all that goes out the window, as well as looking after yourself. You don’t really care about that either.
“You just focus on one thing – feeding your addiction. I didn’t really care what was doing.”
Taking to Twitter, fans were quick to express their astonishment at how much food Paul was able to eat a day.
One tweeted: “40 chocolate bars & 100 packets of crisps a day. Say you slept 7hrs – that’s over 3 choc bars & 6 packets of crisps every hour! I can’t believe my eyes here.”
Another added: “4 takeaways a night, 40 chocolate bars and 100 bags of crisps .. a DAY!?”
A third said: “Well, I thought I had a bit of an addiction to crisps, but 100 bags a day? Pardon? #TheWorldsFattestMan #WorldsFattestMan.”
Paul made headlines around the world in xx because of his huge size.
For the last decade, he has continued let cameras follow his journey as he slimmed down to 19st and underwent numerous surgeries to remove amount of excess skin.
Wednesday night’s documentary on ITV1 also featured his failed relationship with an American woman called Rebecca Mountain.
The couple had got engaged on TV in the US and their whirlwind romance even say Paul move Stateside for several years. While there, he ended up in court twice for shoplifting to feed his food addiction.
Following Paul’s split with Rebecca several years ago, he moved back to the UK.
Paul is now living alone in sheltered housing in Plymouth, where he has access to round-the-clock care.
After numerous attempts to get his weight back on track, Paul – who began binge eating in his twenties as a form of emotional detachment from issues that started in his childhood, including child abuse – gained an extra 20 pounds during the coronavirus lockdown.
He says his lowest moment of the pandemic was being hoisted out of his flat in a sling by paramedics.
“The pandemic was not too bad because I am used to living in sort of isolation and we were well taken care of, but the delays to everything I need is what has set me back,” Paul said.
“The incident where I had to be carried out meant they are now going to try and get me a ground floor flat so at least there is something good that has come of it.”
