“There’s Just No Snow”: Olympic Icon Shaun White Questions Future Of Winter Sports Amidst Global Warming

3-time Olympic gold medalist Shaun White is one of the top snowboarders in the world. He is also a professional skateboarder and a musician.

He is the Olympic Gold Medalist in half-pipe snowboarding. White also holds the world record for the most X Games gold medals, and the most Olympic medals won by a snowboarder. He has also won 10 ESPY Awards throughout his career in various categories.

Recently, White talked about global warming and what it could possibly mean for the upcoming Winter Olympics. Due to global warming, snow melting has become a major problem around the world, and this could prove to be a huge issue during the Winter Olympics.

So much going on with climate change: Shaun White

Recently in his Big Team Talk for BBC Sport, White revealed his concerns regarding the impact of global warming on the future of the Winter Olympics.

White talks about his concerns regarding the upcoming Winter Olympics. Global warming has had an adverse effect on the world in the past few years. One of the major problems is the glaciers melting.

“I’ve noticed so much going on with climate change because the seasons are so different. I’ve witnessed basically dry spells in the mountains where there’s just no snow and there are tonnes of snow somewhere else that normally doesn’t get that much snow,” said White.

“And so our seasons have been pushed. Usually, by November, we’d be covered in snow in the United States but it is just dry right now,” he added.

The upcoming Winter Olympics will be held in 2022 in Beijing, China. Usually, the Summer Olympics and Winter Olympics are held two years apart. But due to the pandemic, the gap has been reduced to a short span of 6 months this time.

White hopes to make a difference before it’s too late

Snowboarder Shaun White now only hopes to make a difference before it is too late. If things continue like this, soon it will be very difficult to hold the Winter Olympics. White talked about how helpless climate change makes him feel.

“If it continues this way, it will be very interesting to see what happens to winter sports. It’s very concerning and is something that I’m very aware of because I’m a professional snowboarder. I guess climate change for me, makes me feel very helpless,” said White.

“I can only tell from experiences where I’ve been in places that normally you get crazy amounts of snow or you’re watching a mountain that’s a glacier that used to have snow all the way to the parking lot, and now you can barely see little pieces up at the top,” added White.

“It’s definitely hard to watch this all happen before our eyes. I hope we can make a difference,” said White.

Currently, a big question mark looms over the upcoming Winter Olympics. It is high time people wake up and take action against climate change and try to do their part.

As for Shaun White, he has already started gearing up for the Olympics, with his eyes set on yet another gold.
