PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan Reacts to the European Tour’s Massive Rebranding

The golf community has received some major news today. Just a couple of weeks ago, we heard of the new Greg Norman led venture on the Asian Tour. Backed by Saudi Golf, it is set to pump in a staggering $200 million into the Asian Tour. In retaliation, the European Tour has come up with something, and even better, the PGA Tour approves.

The European Tour, or as we now know it, the DP World Tour, has had some significant changes. 2022 is the Tour’s 50th anniversary and prior to it, not only have they changed their name, they have boosted the prize fund to a massive $200 million.

They have also added multiple events and new locations. Keith Pelley, commissioner, said that the name better reflects the global nature of the tour, since 2022 will have 24 of the 47 events staged outside the continent.

PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan calls the rebranding ‘proof’ of growth

Jay Monahan, PGA tour commissioner, who is also on the European Tour board, stands in approval of the rebranding. Extending his gratitude to the multinational company, he said, “Thanks to the support of long-standing partner DP World, today’s announcement significantly elevates the European Tour on a global basis.”

He believes it will be beneficial for the growth of the two tours. He said, “We are excited for the continued growth and evolution of the European Tour, as well as the momentum this provides toward our Strategic Alliance.”

“Our two tours are stronger than at any time in our respective histories, and in part through our strategic alliance, we are both positioned to grow faster in the next ten years than we have at any point in our existence,” Monahan said. “The DP World European Tour partnership is a prime example of that growth, and of a tighter-knit ecosystem with the world of professional golf.”

And for the first time, the tour will also stage three events co-sanctioned by the PGA Tour. These include the Genesis Scottish Open, Barbasol Championship and the Barracuda Championship. The two biggest tours for professional male golfers have really gone all out to maintain and reinforce their dominance in the world. Do you think it is enough?
