Travis Scott said he wanted concerts to feel like ‘wrestling’ in a resurfaced video from 2015.
Tragedy struck at the rapper’s Astroworld festival in Houston, Texas, on Friday night when eight people were killed and hundreds injured when a large crowd surged towards the stage during Scott’s performance.
Scott, real name Jacques Webster, has been widely criticised and accused of continuing his performance while unconscious bodies were being pulled from the crowd, and of not doing enough to stop the show.
In a video for British GQ from 2015, the Sicko Mode star explained his approach to ‘raging’, saying: ‘Since I was six, I wanted to be a f***ing wrestler. So in performances, I always wanted to make it feel like it was the WWF or some s***.”
‘Raging and having fun and expressing good feelings is something I plan on doing and spreading across the globe. I just need air and a mic. I don’t need a stage to f***ing perform, no. We just need something to stand on — it could be somebody. I just need a platform.
‘We don’t like people that just stand, whether you’re Black, white, brown, green, purple, yellow, blue. We don’t want you standing around, like, this is a no-stand zone.’
The 30-year-old added: ‘You find anything you’re gonna use to consume to get you lit’, before listing ‘drugs, water, orange juice and alcohol’.
He said: ‘Whatever you want to do, man, get it in and you just have fun.’
Scott also quipped that attendees of his concerts should ‘delete the Uber app’ and put their phones away, saying: ‘At the end of the night, you should be f***ing throwing up.’
The star, who is expecting his second child with Kylie Jenner, has been arrested twice in the past for provoking his audience to rush the stage in defiance of security measures.
In 2015 and 2018, the star pleaded guilty to public disorder charges.

One of his arrests was captured in his Netflix documentary Look Mom I Can Fly.
In a video shared after the tragedy last week, Scott said: ‘I just wanna send out prayers to the ones that was lost last night.
‘We’re actually working now to identify the families so we can help assist them through this tough time. My fans really mean the world to me and I always want to leave them with a positive experience.
‘Anytime I can make out anything that’s going on, you know, I stop the show and you know, help them get the help they need. I could just never imagine the severity of the situation.

‘To the ones that was lost last night, we’re working right now to ID the families so we can help assist them through this tough time. I’m honestly just devastated… I could never imagine anything like this just happening.’
The star will reportedly pay the funeral expenses of the victims, who were between the ages of 14 and 27.
Scott’s girlfriend Jenner, 24, added in her own statement that they were not aware of any fatalities until after the performance.
Scott, Live Nation and Drake, who briefly performed at the festival, have been sued for $1million (£742,000) by one attendee for negligence and alleging that the rappers helped to incite the crowd.
