BBC denies Strictly Come Dancing results ‘fix’ amid ‘favouritism’ row after Adam Peaty elimination

The BBC has denied that the results on Strictly Come Dancing favour any contestants following Adam Peaty’s elimination from the competition, after his mum expressed her belief that his exit was a ‘fix’.

On Sunday evening, Adam and his professional dance partner Katya Jones became the latest pairing to leave the competition after performing an upbeat Jive and landing in the bottom two opposite Tilly Ramsay and Nikita Kuzmin.

While they are said to be in ‘good spirits’ after their departure from the show, the Olympian’s mum, Caroline Peaty, tweeted that she thought the result was a ‘total fix’, adding: ‘I’m not buying the public vote.’

So far, there have been 18 completed series of Strictly, with the most recent champion being comedian Bill Bailey, who won last year with his partner Oti Mabuse.

The Sun calculated that out of the 18 celebrity winners, there have been eight people who have worked with the BBC, including TV personality Stacey Dooley, Holby City actor Tom Chambers and presenter Ore Oduba.

The publication said that it found that 44% of the past winners were affiliated with the BBC, claiming that BBC stars were 50% more likely to make it to the final.

However, a BBC spokesperson refuted the claim concerning the unverified statistics, saying in a statement: ‘These statistics are misleading. The winner of Strictly is decided by the public vote.’

While some stars who participate on Strictly have associations with the BBC, many are also known to viewers due to their work across various broadcasters and fields.

Following Adam’s mum’s tweet about his elimination from the show, Katya responded, writing: ‘Thank you for your support Caroline and the entire family. He is definitely a dancer inside and I’ve seen it with my eyes! What a privilege it’s been for me. X.’

In a post shared on Instagram, the swimmer spoke out against critics, writing: ‘For the people who tried to bring us down throughout the show, please challenge yourself to be better. The world needs much more positivity and truth.’

There are now eight couples left in the competition, including John Whaite and Johannes Radebe, Rose Ayling-Ellis and Giovanni Pernice and AJ Odudu and Kai Widdrington.

Strictly Come Dancing returns on Saturday at 6.40pm on BBC One.
